Alot of the Apple/DJ NG type stuff sounds alot, ALOT like the stuff that people in South Africa rock. Interestingly Dennis Ferrer is massive over there as well.

from my experience at the time, i was very much under the impression that it came from a conversation between then Kiss DJs, Matt 'Jam' Lamont and EZ, when Matt said "I'm not playing any of that grimey garage... ."
This stuff is the good stuff. Apple isn't even 4x4 is he...? More broken/soca?
The rest is indistinguishable from house ordinare as far as I can tell anyway...

i'm really liking the broken percussive stuff from apple (even though my copy of bean arrived with a lip like a ski jump). from an overseas perspective, i can tell thing have gone more underground, london-centric because i've had to order from rhythm division for the first time in about three years. the bigger (and sometimes more reliable) sellers haven't got the distro yet.

I love that 'tell me' track, it sounds so much like coffee table kwaito, i really hope the producers start looking to africa.
Really, really interesting piece, thx for taking the time to transcribe it.
A person can really glean a lot from that conversation, not only from the explicit details/venues/tunes/DJs/genre labels (totally fascinating info there), but from the way that they're discussing everything, certain points crystal clear to all, other points needing to be returned to and hashed out ... you really get a sense of the difference between this and the northern scenes too, tune-wise ... what I love is how one word can cover concentric circles that overlap, then you go deeper and deeper into those concentricities and new microcosms are there, micro-scenes with slightly different social/fashion/aesthetic expectations and always there's a bit of overlap, it's so interesting to be able to get a sense of the differences between what gets played at the afterhour parties versus the club proper, which of course makes perfect sense and is immediately understood, but for an outsider like moi there'd be absolutely no way to learn about the insider details of that kind of thing (shy of being on AIM with producers/djs, lol) ... so yeah, much appreciation for the piece, blackdown.

just makes the scene sound even more boring and grimmer than i initially thought. compounded even further by the retarded promotion (um.. lets make sure noone confuses this with hed kandi style crap by.. um... putting half naked girls sayin 'shh' on the flyer). ive got a feeling this one is a lot more exciting on the outside lookin in.

maybe part of the appeal of this stuff is it's easier to "socialise over"
haha. the few of these tunes i've bought have had to go under the hot tap for flattening. some really wonky pressing going on for sure!
Great article there. Leads me onto the question of whether anybody has any sets by any of the DJs which are playing at these afterparties "when it gets really grimey" - Statix/ Wigman etc - the MYSPACE links don't reveal much. Is it a case of nothing live being recorded/ available to download/ buy yet? Any boxsets/ CD packs of live events I should be looking out for?
this apple guy is very good.
one track on his myspace makes me think of afro-latin-influenced broken beat, but harder and with a bit of balls (thank god).
the first track - mr bean, is like the drum pattern from wileys no qualms but with a techno-y synth and a broken beat rhythm.

After reading this piece I went back and listened to Perempay's most recent show and also Supa D's.
I wasn't particularly moved by the show - it was nice enough, but again, nothing really leapt out at me. It's just all too, I don't know... lounge-y. Apple is fuckin' brilliant though - those tracks on his myspace page definitely stand out against the majority of these tunes - there is something particularly different about them. Is this guy like Funky's Wiley or what? Do a lot of people like him?
You know what it reminds me of? Does anyone remember that track "What Have You Done" by One Tribe? It was on Pure Garage V, and doesn't actually sound a lot like garage, but it does sound quite a bit like this.

I know what frustrates me most about funky now: I am dying for some more soul and femininity in the testosterone-hell that is current underground UK dance music, and though funky is providing this alternative, my gut is telling me that it won't be the answer I'm looking for.

i think this is a reference to the crowd/audience being, ahem, pretty 'road' rather than the music right now.
