I think too often the critical move taken by listeners and artists both is to define their vision by virtue of what they reject - on the one hand there are people who applaud funky when it becomes less housey, less feminine, less kitsch ("oh my god the instrumental of "African Warrior" is actually really good!!" being a good example of this - not that this is an awful thing to say, I even understand where it's coming from, but I've read it about seven times now). On the other, people who applaud any clear rejection of immaturity in favour of "deep" tracks. Fair enough that Roska wants to react against people reducing him to grime-in-disguise, but I think a better way to do this would be to work the more dangerous side of his approach into more expansive tracks that combined a housey or "deep" feel with his more darkly percussive elements. Instead the solution seems to be to pursue a scaled-back middleground.

For me, funky is at its best when it's throwing all the balls into the air. One reason I love that Mak 10/Shantie set to death is that it seems dedicated to this - lots of tough muscular rhythms AND lots of ridiculous, gaseous helium female vocals (also this reminds me of the golden age of rave = never a bad thing).

At any rate I much prefer "Feeline"/"Climate Change"/"Nasty Nasty Nasty" Roska to "Wonderful Day"/"Proverbs Roska. Accordingly my favourite track on the new EP is the "Pyramids" redux of bonus track "Without It".

I just think 'Proverbs' is (from the samples) a remarkably good Detroit-y track - nowt to do with wanting the scene to become more polite.

What is the Mak 10/Shantie set of which you speak - sounds great?

I think the Mak10/Shantie set was March 26? The link was posted here a while back...

It's already the thing I've listened to most this year I think.

Agree completely- and with Mak10, HH Banton and a few others, it's definitely Deja that are showing the more interesting sides of this sound. Underappreciated perhaps, but that's everyone else's loss really.

It's suddenly reappeared on my dial over the last few months and Rinse seems quite inferior really. In terms of grime I think that statement's a given- no idea what they've been upto over the last couple of years though.

Ah, I know. Just surprised to read something you said on dance music that I even vaguely disagreed with! Are you still posting stuff to skykicking (if i have the name correct)?

Cool, I'll search for that set. Must've missed it first time round.

dont think ive heard deja on my radio for years (is it digital/online only now?). i can get rinse, but they have too many shit house shows that make me swear in the car.

I have to disagree..... They're both good for their separate entities but I think Rinse has to have the winning card for innovation. Deja seems to follow in their footsteps in a few things. Podcasts, online streaming..... Back in the day I used to LOVE the live calling session on Rinse on Sunday nights.... that was the highlight of my weekend at the end of EVERY weekend..... The continuation of deliverance is a BIG winner for me
