I'll be in NYC for Dub War on the 18th where the artist I manage (XI) will be playing at Dubwar (woo hoo!).

We got basically the whole of Saturday and Saturday night to experience the sights and sounds of New York. This isn't a hell of a lot of time. Because of my genetic heritage I am delirious with excitement at the idea of walking around New York City, and without direction will probably just make an arse of myself by finding endless enjoyment in riding around in those checkered taxis (please say they still exist) and saying "how yu doooowin'" to civilians. I'm British, you must understand.

So far my suggestion have been:

Empire State Building
PS1 art gallery

i like to get paninis at inoteca on the LES, if you like "small plates" style and want a somewhat classy dinner out. if you want authentic mexican food, there's a great bodega on the northside of williamsburg (Bedford Ave and N6th or N7th) that some hispanic people from the neighborhood turned me on to. It's basically speakeasy style--you have to walk to the back to find the food counter, since there's no sign indicating the place is a restaurant--but it has the best tacos, burritos, flautas, etc that i've ever eaten. Hands down. And it's the only place I've ever heard a Mexican or Puerto Rican claim is authentic.

i can think of a million places based on what you're looking for. what kind of food do you like?

oh no really? she wasn't there in the early 90s. she wasn't even born then eh. i kinda like the fact she fucks anything that moves though. my mate lived round the corner from it so it was where we went for breakfast at 7 at night lol

um, but seriously, you need to narrow down what you are looking to do... hang out w/ coked up hipsters? do the standard tourist sites? dive bars? cheap food? forgotten neighborhoods? record shopping? museums? sporting events?

Uhh... record shopping, yes.

And everything else I will consider without prejudice.

Thanks for the suggestion so far. I like this idea of Steak Frites with a side of Lindsay Lohan.

Any areas I just can't go wrong in general being in? Remember, I only have one full day, so I can't waste time travelling long distances between locations.

Lower East Side great for general grungy punkiness and shopping

Area around Canal Street/Chinatown (nearby I think) I really like

Central Park of course is amazing

Harlem is really interesting, even if you only have time to walk down 125th Street

I really liked Washington Heights - great Dominican etc food there too! :)

record shopping, uh there was already a lengthy NYC record shopping thread on here... basically Kim's for new dubstep, rock, and experimental sort of stuff, VP for new reggae, Deadly Dragon for old reggae, Rock N Soul for new hip hop, Turntable Lab for "taster's choice' hip hop, b-more breaks, house etc, Academy for used rock, disco, funk, soul, etc... if you have any specific niche interests (brazilian, rare hip hop n breaks, punk), ask...

well forget PS1 queens is too far for one day. unless, like, Pan Sonic is playing there or something. i would just run around manhatten and maybe later a brooklyn bar or 15.

my fellow americans (i.e. me and my travelling companions tom and rachael) are two brits (and a quasi-brit) in NYC this weekend n all. will be following the tips above - sorry we'll miss dub war and sick boy by just one weekend, but there u go. we're going to have a meet-up somewhere in the east village (i think) tomorrow night if anyone's about - location as yet undetermined...

My fellow Brits:

If you are in the Lower East Side go to the Dumpling House on Eldridge where you can get 5 dumplings and a Vegetable pancake for $2.50.

Also take note of a night we're at putting on Saturday 12th (Tomorrow):

Let me know if you need any more tips, also wouldn't bother with empire state I hear Rockerfella is better.

ah, the dumpling house... one of my favourite places in the world.
best to go there and eat the dumplings as an appetiser while walking down the street, then head to chinatown for the rest of dinner.
there's a restaurant i always go to, but i can't remember its name. i just know it by sight and always go with the same people.
basically, it's bright red, on a corner and about half a mile up from the dumpling house, on the same street and serves an amazing stewed fish in a spicy tamarind broth - and when i say spicy, i mean tear-to-the-eye, nose-runningly hot but somehow really delicately flavoured, too.
if you can be bothered to blindly explore on that recommendation and chance upon the right place, you won't be at all disappointed.

from what i remember form my visit a couple of years ago-

MOMA- get lucky and find a member to help you escape queues. after 20 mins, you'll be 'oh right, another picasso, next!'- best modern art museum in the world for the hits. no exception.

hat shop/cd shop on fulton st.(i think) nr ground zero- many a fine mix cd (reggae, soca etc $5 a pop)- saves travelling further out for 7"s.

century 21 nearby for clothes.

wander aimlessly.

otherwise do a search on here for previous threads and eat/ drink and be happy.

edit: oh yeah empire state- there's more than one entrance- we chanced upon a quiet one- in straight away etc, but not worth the 2-3 hours it takes to do. street level's better

assuming you no talking about Bavarian potato dumplings... ever been to Din Tai Fung? too bad i don't think there is one in NY though. but then again, this site is old, i know a few have opened in Europe since 2006.

EDIT: the head Lama on a jet ski do i wish i was close to one right now at this moment... (mouth literally watering as i sit and ponder)

OK all these suggestions are wicked. I'm totally checking out this Steak Frites business, it seems anybody I talk to about New York starts talking about places to eat Streak Frites.

That or trainers and how cheap you can get them.

One thing I am concerned about though is that since we have basically one full day, I imagine I will probably have to stick to one general area so as not to waste too much time on travel. Our hotel is in Upper West Side Manhattan... I think.

What would you NYC natives say is the best general area to throughly check out if you got one day (and you're interested in drinking, records, trainers, not a lot of tourist shit, and steak frites)?
Everyone in Toronto says that Brooklyn is where to be. Is it?
