Chicken in the UK

maybe i live in an expensive neighborhood or on the breadline, but eating well is fucking expensive... take red peppers... non-organic are 3 bucks a pound... a head of lettuce is like 2-3 bucks... a small container of strawberries or blackberries is between 3-6 dollars...

that's terrible. I can buy nice local veg to last the week for about £3

berries are well expensive everywhere, but it's not like you need them to eat well

"200 bucks on a night of clubbing... c'mon now... even on my worst night, i don't think i've spent 100..."
Really? I just looked at Ministry of Sound's website, to see David Morales is twenty quid in and that's before you get drink, drugs, taxi etc I mean, a gram of coke is fifty squid, there are loads of people who would do that in a night and say that The Fat Duck is too expensive, it's just what you prefer really isn't it? I just strongly disagree with this

"who can afford to eat at Heston Blumenthal's restaurant's after all?"
Here are some prices for premiership tickets - no-one says "who can afford to go to a game?"

"I should be going to the Fat Duck soon - will post a review."
I think it's a wicked experience, maybe it's not the best food ever (although it is really good) but it's a fantastic thing to do, you're there for about four hours and they make a real big thing of it. It's not something I'd want to do loads but if you have a special occasion and you save up and really want to treat yourself then it's great.

to eat a nice meal of vegatables or a "vegatable bake" or whatever the fuck people were saying is simply not cheap... carbs are cheap.... fresh vegatables, besides like carrots and potatos and onions are pricey...

Ahh, well the title does say "Chicken in the UK" - from my experience of America, half-decent raw ingredients are a LOT more expensive than they are in the UK, and a lot of poor people are very fat because they literally cannot afford to eat anything other than processed crap.
On the other hand, it's a lot cheaper to eat out.

Isn't Heston Blumenthal's whole deal just using science to make "perfect" trad British meals? Doesn't seem very radical to me.

I dunno, when I went to The Fat Duck the first course was some foam that they squeeze out of cylinder and freeze on dry ice, you pick it up and it kind of melts in your mouth and there is nothing there but taste. The other courses were things like bacon and egg ice cream, salmon with liquorice, snail porridge, fish flavoured jelly, parsnip flakes with milk etc I don't think it's politically radical but it's not what I would call trad British food.

Ah Ok. sounds interesting, I'm just going what I saw on his TV show. The perfect lamb shank, the perfect bread and butter pudding, etc...

Do you live in the northern hemisphere? If so, why are you expecting to eat delicate summer produce like red peppers, lettuces and berries in January? Eat what's in season - it's always cheaper. In the UK, not just potatoes and carrots but also sweet potatoes, turnips, beetroot, kale, cabbage, sprouts, celeriac, parsnips and lots of other lovely roots and brassicas are really cheap and delicious right now. In the US I'm guessing there will be something similar. Make them into a nice bake with some cheese, or have them in a stew or soup, or roasted in the oven, or boiled or mashed as a side dish with meat when you can afford it. Yeah you might fart a lot but so what?

Ah I didn't see this. Is this true? If so poor you petergunn! Have heard horror stories about the Deep South, about not being able to get any fruit at all except fried green tomatoes. Maybe you should start going on guerilla vegetable digs or raiding orchards, or 'scrumping' as we say in the UK. :)

i live in nyc, i don't believe there are any orchards nearby... you can find plenty of fruit anywhere in the US, but it will cost you...

Heh, when I was growing up we went through a phase of not having much cash and virtually lived for a while on blackberry and (scrumped) apple crumble - easier said than done if you don't live in or near a fairly rural area, of course. Though having said that I recall making ice-cream with 8+ lbs of blackberries picked in a small nature reserve not far from Manor House tube station a few summers ago...
