aw gutted she didn't get the world record

but bolt. my god. for a sprint race a winning margin of over 0.6 seconds is fucking unbelievable. he is don bradman class ahead of the rest of history.

I thought Melanie Walker was fantastic, too. A very stirring race! Jamaican sprinters own Berlin. Although I still think Allyson Felix will take the 200. I want her to.

Looking forward to seeing what the Jamaican 4x100 team can do. The mind boggles.

I could write an essay on the poise of Blanka Vlasic.

Thrilled to see a Swansea Harrier in the Men's 400m hurdles. That's my old club!

“I was too upright. It wasn’t a good race, but it was a fast one. I don’t know where I can stop, I just try to run as fast as possible even if I was feeling a little tired.

Oh well, better luck next time Usain.

I could write an essay on the poise of Blanka Vlasic.

There's a novel to be had in her cheekbones and lips alone.

just to remind you that bolt once didn't win races.

so the bbc question - how long will these records stand for? johnson reckons the person who breaks bolt's records has not been born yet (!!)

also, if he gets an injury which is terminal and he can "only" run 9.75s for the rest of his career, will it get boring?

Watching that Osaka clip...they had no idea what was coming, did they?

Osaka was a shit Champs, though. Helsinki was good, mainly because of the weird weather (thunder and lightning during the men's 400m hurdles final - very exciting!). Berlin has been the best WC for years. Maybe, even, the best since Tokyo '91.

bolt's reaction time was the fastest of the 200m

faster reaction times in the 100m, but i guess because of the false start they were more cautious in the 200m

It'll get more like women's sprinting is now, with unbeatable marks and no-one breaking the record for 20 years...ie, unfortunately, a lot less riveting.

splits from last night.

no doubts in my mind that he can do under 19 seconds if he's fit and ready. definite slowing in the last quarter, plus he ran 14.36 over 150m in manchester and, whilst there was no bend in manchester, his first 100m then was only 9.90 (and he wasn't at the peak of his training)

Historically the 200m record has been less than twice the 100m record, which is strange on reflection as top speed is meant to be reached at about 60m. Either way, in the longer race the runner is flying at the 100m mark, and 'starts' the 2nd 100m with considerable momentum, rather than from the starting blocks.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure now is the first time in an age where the 100m record has been less than half the 200m record, which suggests that Bolt can go below 19s

yeah, true....

shoulda said sheer ridiculous drama with a jingoistic angle...

trying to think of other heart-in-mouth races/competitions I've witnessed....

Aouita-Cram in the 1500 in...1986? when Aouita broke the world record, I seem to remember
Jackson-Kingdom and Jackson -Allen Johnson in the hurdles provided some good ones
Dreschler-Joyner-kersee in the long jump
some steeplechases have been humdingers

I'm too young to have enjoyed some of those. Seoul '88 is a child's memory (the scandal, mainly; but also the beautiful stadium). In fact Tokyo was the first games I remember being totally gripped by, probably because I was in junior county competitions by then.

Steve Backley vs. Jan Zelenzney was an epic rivalry. By about 1991, one would have to throw a world record to claim victory over the other. This was ruined by Backley's multiple injuries and the fact that they both got so close to hitting the running track that the javelins they were using got banned. Which kind of spoils the very idea of a javelin 'record'.

I just watched Bolt's runs on youtube; peculiar feeling watching them - my spine kinda crawled. The Doc said it was like witnessing evolutionary development, live on screen, and he's right, it was so weird to watch, like 'oh god, we're evolving'.
