Robert Hood fabric Mix

so this is fucking ace, just totally funk filled and all around wonderful, fast but not "pure banging bruv." Its so good I can get over my mnml snob thing of being like "oh these records sound like all those records from the 90s." I was gonna make some grandoise point about authenticity and timing, but I'm sleepy. Who else agrees with me?

Yes totally! I'm just listening to it for the first time right now and loving it. It is such a contrast to modern minimal, the tunes are so much more physical, the beat way more upfront, really more...dancey, I guess. Good fucking stuff. In another ten years we can look back and have a 90's minimal techno vs. 00's minimal techno debate. I really don't know which one I'd pick...

always dug robert hood, even his tinkling-piano/semi-jazzier things ("nighttime world"). his was one of the grounding influences for me re: techno: "internal empire" and "minimal nation" were some of the first techno records i ever heard/bought and remember how they sounded so different from anything else.

be interested in hearing this, good to know fabric still comes thru every now and then.

He's the best techno DJ of them all IMHO.

His set at Lost in 2003 was the best thing I've ever heard in a club, people were looking at each other like 'f&%£ me this is good...'.

I really like this style of djing when listening to techno. I always like the way the quick switching and cutting rubs against the natural flow of the records, there's something really nice in the juxtaposition of it. Someone modern who does this is Sven Weisemann. His ra podcast was really really good, only time I've heard a house dj rewind a record.

For me Robs music has always been about the hi-hats & to my surpise he talks about just that in the latest issue of wire!

Bought this the other day just because I read this thread - that's how fickle I am! Or, you might say, slightly lost regarding what to buy at the mo so open to persuasion.

Anyway, I saw the other Fabric mixes cheap in HMV (spit) and wondered if any where as good as Hoods...meaning tech smart, not cheesy/disco/house with vocals...er...if you know what I mean. Any suggestions?

I like Carl Craig's Fabric Mix, and the earlier Tyrant 2xCD set... far too much hipster rubbish released by Fabric, I gave up my subscription because of the high levels of dross. Really looking forward to getting Hood's mix however.

What's 'hipster rubbish'?! :) Is that a new genre? Hipster to me is...hip...;) Don't tell me someone's hijacked the concept...:slanted: Like...er...Glastonbury is 'cool'...

I agree, but have however not quit my subscription because a gem comes through every once in a while and they aren't very expensive.

some favs:
akufen - fabric 16 introduced me to the micro house / minimal thing
ricardo villalobos - fabric 36 damn good
global communication - fabric 26 mark pritchard's first half is really nice

marcusintalex - fabriclive 35 best drum & bass mix cd in years, altho that might not impress many here
james murphy & pat mahoney - fabriclive 36 nice little disco thing

carl craig, audion, aim, ellen allien and ewan pearson ones were pretty good too

Matthew Dear (as Audion)'s one is still my favourite. It's dark, deep and weirdly funky and really cohesive as a mix. Nothing like what Hood is doing but a million miles from the "cheesy/disco/house with vocals" you want to avoid.

Don't think it got or gets a lot of love but I highly recommend it.

Thats the sort of thing I'm on about. I expect I'm just being a grumpy old man. I'm sure its good for the kids to dance the night away to.

Mmm...bet that Freddie Mercury remix is...er...:slanted:...'hip'? Not my kind of thing by the looks of it...but I'm only guessing...not knowing a lot of the names mentioned. I'm a 'grumpy' old ex-DJ who's no longer in touch with what The Kids are into...

Ewan Pearson played out our club back in the 90s and was very good so I might have a listen to that one. Thanks for the recommendations, anyway. I haven't ventured into techno for a long time so I'm ignorant of who is really worth listening to these days.

the robert hood fabric mix is amazing. been playing it in my car the last two weeks, in and out of work. cant beat a bitta techno at 8:30am in the morning. get some weird looks from people at bus stops, but what the hey!

love "and we shall make our escape" off the hood music 3 ep, just keeps coming at you and then going aweay for a wee bit and then back again. brilliant stuff. i wish i could make this a physical body that i could perhaps marry and even fornicate with.
