Blog by email with WordPress?

Does anyone know how to make this work?

Word Press forums are pretty poor on this - no actual solutions.

I have Postie installed and it works when I hit the manual refresh button, and I have a cron job installed by dreamhost tech support (who know much more than me, so should have done it right!).

Does wp-cron need to be edited? Dunno.

Absolutely stumped. Tried upgrading to 2.5 but no dice.

Any WP users here have this working?

Remind me why you actually need to do this?

edit: what version of wordpress are you running? 2.5 is the latest.

It just reduces the barriers to blogging.

I can email from my phone. This would mean I can blog from my phone, which is actually very useful to me.

It also means I can send pics into the blog straight from my phone.

These features have been very useful for "the other blog" - i.e. it works out of the box with blogger!

I am on 2.5 now.

Yes John. I've read the support docs. And the forums. And the blog posts that the forums point to - including the ones in German and Swedish. And yes I've read the support info on cron, and the postie support docs, neither of which are terribly useful. And yes I have put a request into dreamhost tech support and asked for help with cron, and yes they have actually made the changes that are supposed to be made.

If I knew, exactly, what the problem was, I'd probably have a way of fixing it. But I've done everything I'm supposed to, and it still doesn't work. I think there may possibly be some configuration of either wp-cron.php or wp-mail.php that I am missing but I can't see what.

Lots of other people on the Wordpress forums are also struggling. There seem to be two groups of people on there - people like me who have done everything asked of them and still can't get it to work, and techies who are saying they've made it work but don't say how.

Again - this can't be that hard - blogger has it out of the box.

Ok, so what happens when you try and post a blog entry?

How is what you end up with different from what you are trying to post?

The posts sit in the email account I have set up for it and do nothing.

They only appear when I go to the Postie plug in and hit the button that makes it manually look at the email account and put what's there into a post. Which implies that cron is not working right. But cron has been a) checked twice by dreamhost tech support and b) is apparently identical to the set of the postie developer. There are hints out there that wp-mail.php needs to be hacked, but my wp-mail.php doesn't look like what is described. Albeit, described in German, or Swedish.

oh ok - I thought it might just be you were getting titles through and not body text or something.

Buy a pad and a pen innit.

That was happening at first. That stopped for some reason. I don't know why. I didn't change anything - it just stopped. I then installed Postie. Still no luck. Yes I've tried deactivitating postie... several times...

There's some weird stuff in that codex link saying that wordpress strips out basic html from email blogging and also won't let you do images in 2.5.

Thus making it all pretty fucking pointless?!

Glad you are making progress though - this is way nerdier for you than I am used to!

I have had to mess about with CODE.

I therefore feel SULLIED.

Not bothered about html - I don't understand it anyway. Images are working :). The built in email by blogging doesn't seem to work; you need to use Postie. Blogging by email would be a way round a bit of your workplace web usage rules...

A bigger concern with 2.5 is that it no longer has a PressIt button, but the old one on my browser bar still works - for text at least.
