indeed. Crofton interviewed the dude responsible for that record and we are planning to bring him to Berlin next year.

start a thread about older 20th century music but don't call it "retro" cuz that just brings to mind a boat load of campy rubbish.

somewhat related, reverse pollination, i'm thoroughly enjoying this, perhaps not quite as heavy as above, but a damn sweet collection as well

That comp looks pretty mighty Zhao. Will check it out. You know what I mean re. "retro" - I had nothing specific in mind, but for the last year or so I've not been checking out anything new (bar The Bug's London Zoo) and have been much more excited about exploring unknown (to me) older musics = psych, garage etc. I may start a thread but I'd want to avoid being a bitching old curmudgeon, so have kept my trap shut so far.

the new bass clef "may the bridges i burn light the way"...i love this guy. a dubby dance record featuring occasional trombone or trumpet or whatever, gotta love the slightly cheeky element. read somewhere someone describing it as if the specials put out a dubstep record...maybe.

demdike stare "symbyosis" (belatedly)

dj sprinkles "midtown 120 blues" (still)

also trying to get my head around the oneohtrix point never hype. "zone s w/o people" is kind of interesting, the other two albums haven't clicked for me yet.

Ooh, I nearly picked that up in Sounds of the Universe the other day, but went for a TP Orchestre Poly Rhythmo de Benin thing instead. I might have to make that and the tumbele comp the next steps on my mission to become less clueless about all things african / afro-latin / afro caribbean.

man, you got that right...i have the week off and planned to run errands today but haven't stepped outside all day. brrrr...

i've been rediscovering coil: "new backwards", "ape of naples, "LSD", "black light district", "moon's milk", "stolen/contaminated"...and the newer stuff sleazy christopherson has recorded under the names soisong (pretty cool) and threshold houseboys choir.

and also donovan's "cosmic wheels", an overlooked album feat. suzi quatro, chris spedding and cozy powell!

this is probably beyond the pale credibility wise, but they're about 1000x better than I would have expected from the press coverage*. plus that 'you got the love' remix is stunning.

*bizarrely, the tone of the lovely guitar line on this reminds me of Bark Psychosis. Which is rather lovely. And the vocal interplay suggests they have listened to Maxinquaye's bizarre voice arguments at one point.

Edit: "Heart Skipped a Beat really reminds me of Absent Friend by Bark Psychosis." - some guy/girl on ILM. Shit, weird coincidence, and for a different song...

fuck the hype, the xx album (and that remix) is one of the coolest things that came out last year. they have real young marble giants element to them, also a little bit like klang (donna matthews' band after elastica), yet don't really sound like anything else around. added cred: they recorded the album when they were 19 years old!
