What is good? (Ideally for kids AND adults)

What is absolute rubbish?

I saw Nim's Island yesterday with my 6 year old and it was pretty good.

Great to see a film with a girl and woman in the lead roles which doesn't rely on loads of explosions or antagonism.

Plus - very little prospect of knock-on merchandise. :)

I think two minor criticisms would be that:

a) Jodie Foster's agrophobia isn't really explained properly for kids.

b) Whilst the lack of explosions is welcome, the film is more about what bad things could happen than things actually happening. Which is probably more of an issue for adults than kids.

Indiana Jones isn't very good I'm afraid, but we went to see it and the audience was an average age of 40, I would hope that a Saturday matinee at Peckham Odeo or somesuch with a much younger audience might be better - I was hoping for a full scream and laugh session - with an adult audience it just felt a bit retarded. Plus there's like a 10 minute plot exposition at one point which got me totally lost, maybe an 8 year old might fare better!

Been around a while, but I thought Ratatouille was amazing

Saw it at the cinema with my 5 yr old daughter. We loved every minute.

Yeah that was a good one!

The Alvin and the Chipmunks film was better than I expected (in that I didn't gouge my own eyes out with my keys) but not great. A hit with the 6 year old daughter, though. Some fairly good references to the corruption of the rock n roll industry for the dads.

Thanks for the tip off on Indiana Jones, mistersloane - I will avoid that until xmas telly in a few years...

Mate of mine went to a screening last week. Spent the rest of next day with his head in his hands, unable to believe that indy survives (oops, was that a spoiler?) a nuclear blast by hiding in a fridge.

Ahh well, fridges were built to last in them days, weren't they?

There was a photo of him on the front of a newspaper the other day with the words "Ford: I'm not too old to be Indy", which made me think of him in skinny jeans and an ironic Atari tee-shirt, with a floppy fringe and a satchel covered in pin badges. :)

Shutup shutup shutup that's a good bit!!

I loved the Golden Compass and I don't care, sod all the Pullman diehards, it's beautiful and Nicole Kidman's an evil witch and I WANT A TALKING POLAR BEAR TOO.

I'll check out the Chipmunks one, I'd forgotten about that. Lol at the keys in eyes bit. Transformers is AMAZING for boy, I'd imagine it'd bore girls to tears.

They light him in the film so he looks really old to start off with, and then gold light and airbrush him at the end so he looks more sexy again, funny.

My daughter really enjoyed the recent adaptation of "Horton Hears A Who" and (especially compared to the craptacular takes on Seuss recently) it was actually quite enjoyable. Also captured the feel of his illustrations and the practical use of his whirlygigs quite inventively.

The best part? No fart jokes which seems to be a huge rarity in kid's movies these days.

Ratatouile thirded as well. Absolutely magical movie. Having loved that, along with "The Incredibles" and "The Iron Giant" I must ask...is "Cars" any good?

Yeah I think my daughter loved "horton" and thought "cars" was ok. My parents took her to "cars" and didn't really enjoy it that much though. Probably worth a go on DVD...

Mistersloane, if I had my way you would get a talking polar bear for xmas...

Speed Racer on IMAX if you want your kids to see what kinds of visuals they'll encounter if they ever smoke DMT. :D

In all seriousness, it's a very enjoyable film all around.

this was my over-riding reaction to the film too. i spent the next week pestering my travelling companions (we were in portland, OR at the time) about how i might get hold of an armoured bear to roll around the ends with.

I love the way three people felt the need to write almost identical definitions to the perfectly good one that was already there.

All within 24 hours of each other too. Did they have a committee meeting to agree, then all rush back to post?

It's probably one person with four logins, trying desperately to get as many 'thumbs up' as possible.

On the upside, at least it isn't a 'slang' term for a clearly fictitious and utterly implausible 'sex act'.
