music and the unborn child

I'm having a baby in February... what will happen if I subject my unborn child to the might of the Gramps Hifi? Will the vibrations distress it?

I think he/she'll be ok. Maybe not if you use these:

depends on whether you mean Mozart on your grandparents' radiogramme:

or "GRAMPS HI-FI @ THE VOLKS (Brighton) - 15k in the form of 8 Looney bins and 6 Void Stasys 3s in a tiny wee club"

Music has the right to children

first I though this thread title might be a new album title from someone prone to pretentious nonsense like Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness  or even BoC :slanted:

then I misread & thought it was about subjecting your child-to-be to the Cramps

then I thought it might be about your grandparents' hi-fi

Congratulations Betty!

Good to hear from you.

Gramps Hi Fi cannot harm your child. If the mids are a bit shouty it might hurt your ears a bit but it's supposed to be a very well set up system so I very much doubt that will happen.

One of the best pieces of advice the midwife of my first child gave me was that babies like noise. The womb is apparently a hugely noisy environment. The sound of your heart beating and your stomach digesting is extremely loud when you're that small and right next to it.

This is one reason why you shouldn't subject new born children to silence. It totally freaks them out and can make them sensitive to noise. They're used to loud sound, so give them music. And no, sub-100hz infrasonics is not going to vibrate them so much it hurts them. If you're comfortable with it, the baby in its fluid shell is going to be fine.

My first son is now 9-days old and I can confirm that he likes a lot of noise, as he gets a bit stary and anxious when it's very quiet. He also likes lot of bouncing up and down with his mummy on the gym ball, nothing else seems to quell him when he's fractious.

Just to restate what has already been said, it won't hurt the baby. Both my little boys got battered by bass in the womb (mostly shaka but some dubstep too) and the only side effect so far is that the first song they could sing was "Tafari is the Capain of My Ship" by Max Romeo otherwise they are about as normal as any kids could be that had to share a house with me and my records!
