So... what's the difference between this and regular speed?

An additional methyl group.

Which makes it come on faster (hence more addictive) and last longer. Plus it's usually available as a hydrochloride salt which makes it suitable for smoking and shooting up, which is always bad news as far as addiction potential goes.

I've tried speed, (didn't like it, I'm jumpy enough at the best of times) but from what I've read and seen of meth users I wouldn't touch this with a bargepole.

Think I remember something about the nazis inventing it to keep their troops on the ball, or am I getting it mixed up with another drug?

It wasn't invented by the Nazis, but they did use it extensively. As did the Brits and Americans. It was invented by a Japanese dude IIRC. Hitler took daily injections of the stuff.

Although it's more addictive than regular amphetamine, it's said to give a 'smoother', less actually 'speedy' high, which makes some sense because chemically it's in between amphetamine and ecstasy. Not that I've tried it, it's still pretty rare over here, which is probably a good thing on balance.

Edit: methadone was invented in Nazi Germany, as it happens.

When I lived in Australia it was pretty ubiquitous and was subject to Daily Mail style shock horror head lines about kids taking it for breakfast then eating their parents for lunch or something. I'm glad the UK is all about the cocainezzz

A friend's dealer tried to get him on meth with the old "first one's always free" trick

And it's a lot more fun. It's much more euphoric than regular amphetamine, closer to MDMA (Note - YMMV)

Ahem... drug geekery - the hydrochloride salts smokeability is peculiar to methamphetamine - hydrochloride salts of other drugs are not necessarily smokeable. It's all to do with the temperature at which the chemical vapourises being lower than the temperature at which it breaks down.

This is turning into the dirtiest drug "nerd orgy" in Dissensus history. Not really a complaint.

Re methadone, yes it was developed by nazis under the patent Dolophine, but contrary to urban legend dolophine wasn't named after "adolf" it's named for "dolor" (=pain in latin) and "fin" (=finish). [it was first manufactured and used as maintenance treatment in the US as "methadone" by researchers at my first job, Mary Jane Creek and co]

I recently discovered the potentiating effects of grapefruit juice on opiate maintenance treatment drugs. Then I looked at the label and realized that, in fact, many others had discovered this before. It's in fine print on the label insert.

Always knew grapefruit had synergistic-y effects with buspar and similar drugs but this was like Christmas in November.

My drug geek mind was recently blown when on the uk drugsforum it was revealed to me that heroin is not available in the EU as no4 but only as a no 3 freebase that needs some kind of acidic partner in order to become solvent and bangable. What a pain in the ass.

A housemate of mine was annoyed recently at how difficult it was for her to buy citric acid, and how much suspicion she was treated with when she asked for it. Thing is, what she actually wanted it for was making elderflower cordial - it just sounds too innocent to be true, doesn't it? :)

I'm not familiar with "no 4" and "no 3" slang... but any freebases of any drug are pretty insoluble in water?

My flatmate brews beer at home, and one of the supply websites sells lactose, for use in making stout, I think. The site says that if you order more than 4 packages, they have to inform the police. My guess would be that as lactose is fairly common cutting agent for coke etc that's the reasoning behind it.

Ha, just goes to show that if they were serious about stopping people using drugs they'd be SUBSIDISING lactose, not scrutinising people purchasing it.

Doing drugs socially has really lost its novelty for me recently. You get sober around drug people enough and you realize that they are so powerfully uninteresting that you actually begin to feel the shame of recognizing yourself as one of those people WHILE you're on drugs. It's alright every now and again for a laugh though. Still, waking up on someone's couch in a dirty apartment that smells like cat shit at 3 in the afternoon is nowhere near as romantic as it used to be.
