There's a difference between taking an existing genre and consciously putting a new twist on it (which I'd argue was the case with 2Step and UK funky), and trying to simulate an existing genre but being too uninformed or unskilled to pull it off (aka "getting it wrong"), and creating something else as a result.
Lots of 80s post-punk bands liked dance music but had no idea how to make "proper" club tracks, so they came up with a different dance sound. James Chance really did love Ayler and James Brown but wasn't skilled enough to do either of them justice, so you end up with the Controtions and James White & the Blacks.
