^^ Yes a genius. Shame he wasnt more prolific. Picked up a couple of additions to the D'Cruze collection a while back actually.

This is pretty naff post-Control jazzstep. One good tune though.

This is great though. 2 versions of one the best tunes off the LP. Got mine for £1.99!

@Rivet - took that TL from my archive. Think it originally came from rolldabeats, so I cant take credit!

Apparently this is my favourite jungle track (or at least so my Itunes play count indicates):

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Followed by

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Well, above one is probably not really the junglist style we were talking about. My next one does better though:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

There should be some thread about proto-jungle hadcore as well. There are too many gems made in that time. All about the crazy piano-madness!

In the end, I voted for Foul Play/Gurley though. A bit because of Gurley's later work, but mainly because of this one:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

It has all what dance music should have: tactility, rhytmical complexity and some sensual female voice longing for god-knows-what.

Whilst we're on the subject of Tone Def - Darren Jay and Yomi:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Been rinsing this 10" for about 10 years, the original is killer as well:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The BEST Steve Gurley on Tone Def is this though. Steve Gurley and Darren Jay remixing themselves.

Beast of Burden
Never even heard these until today (I really like the record label, and was doing a bit of youtube assisted excavation). Who the bloody hell was DJ Gwange? These 2 tracks are unique, from 93.

93-94 is depthless, isn't it? Behold:

so what should i seek out from Formation? i never really followed DJ SS much. Obviously Black blew my mind a bit the first time i heard it, which was only recently. been playing the Unified Colours mix, but what else should i check out? lots of releases in the early years i see...

Oh man, gotta be No U Turn, Photek has to play second fiddle to that. Although, to be fair we're gettin' more into drum and bass land by 96'/97'.

Wow...
Over 200 posts and not a single mention of Seba?! :slanted:

Check this :

He's been releasing constantly EPs almost for the past 15 years on most of the major labels, had a steady collaboration with Paradox and been spinning Jungle since the early early days.

so what should i seek out from Formation?

Formation is a bit of a weird label. not a single recognizable "Formation sound" like say, Reinforced or Basement Records (though Formation did always tender towards ruffer/darker/harder), and with a few exceptions not a lot of huge anthems like Moving Shadow. there are loads of ca. 92-95 Formation records that competently do whatever sound was big at the moment - ardkore, jungle tekno, darkside, '94 rollers, hardstep - w/o being sensational. so you have to dig a bit maybe, but they definitely had tunes, mostly all SS whether as producer or remixer, or Tango in the early days.

in addition to some other things other people mentioned:

anything Tango was involved in (i.e. Future Followers EP, various remixes)
International Rude Boyz - International Acclaim (Remixes) EP - Paragone Remix
Drum + Bass - EP3 (The Ruff & Ready Remixes)
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
DJ SS - The Rollers Convention EP 3 - United (Grooverider Mix)
MA2 - Rollers Music/Hearing Is Believing (Remixes)
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

and I'm also kinda shocked that no one mentioned the Formation-anthem (after "Black") in all its Love Story-sampling glory
Sound of the Future - The Lighter
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

also there are were a bunch of amazing tunes on F Records, piano hardcore and jungle tekno stuff - more Tango records, Nexus & Blowback, The Brainstorm Crew, etc

Loads of Formation stuff from late 92 through 93 is amazing imo, so things like Darkman, New Breed Of Ravers, Future Followers, The Warning, the Music For The People EP and prob some other ones I'm forgetting. Not so up on the later stuff, but DJ SS seemed to be bossing it around 94-95 with things like the Rollers Convention EP series.
I def agree with padraig that rather than pioneering any single sound they tended to just make whatever style was popular at a given time, but some of their versions of those styles are personal faves.

well granted they ("they" meaning like 80% SS) were pretty good at jungle tekno, darkside, and I would agree that Formation almost certainly hit its peak with the rinseout/hardstep era ca. '95. what's also nice is that even of the records that aren't classics, quite a few are still pretty good, like there's no very seriously lackluster material. and I think you can get a bunch of those records on the cheap, at least compared to a lot of other old jungle 12s.

man it's good to nerd out about jungle again.

you can definitely find formation stuff for decent prices compared to a lot of other stuff, I bought up quite a few of their records a while back. I love DJ SS, especially all the dark stuff he did. Like you say, he perhaps has less 'standout' classics than say Rufige cru/4 hero, but he was very consistent for a good 3 years back there, which is a long time really. Big up SS!

edit: can't find it one youtube , but I love that SS track that samples Baloo from Jungle Book..."I'm the king of the swingers oh the jungle VIP"...genius

Big all-time favourite, even if it does lose the plot a little as it goes on:

This one's pretty cool too:

Great breaks, great samples. Feels oddly soothing in places despite the darkness.
