    films on archive.org

That's amazing, thanks so much for the link! I've always wanted to see http://www.archive.org/details/salt_of_the_earth ... real socialist/unionist dissensus fodder!

Replacement ipod batteries for £20 http://www.ipoddoctor.co.uk/ ... kinda fiddly to take apart but worth it... mine is two years old and the battery only lasts an hour now. Oh and I've not done it but... the battery is just the battery, you're not going to lose anything from the hard drive!

Thats windows software for you... Most of these media players give options about file associations when you install them. iTunes should also have an option to turn off the checking of file associations when you startup. But as always there's too much fiddling to get something simple like this...

    Western Movies

I've not seen The Battle of Elderbush Gulch, but it sounds like an opportunity to whip up some fear & hatred toward indians, whereas Birth of a Nation focuses on fear and hatred toward blacks. Is there any other relationship between them which allows Birth of a Nation to be seen as a western...

    Western Movies

Can you explain how it's a Western please? I simply don't follow you. For me, western-as-genre must be set in a particular place (the west - real or mythical) and include men who ride horses. I can see the western-as-storyline elsewhere such as Star Wars. Also I think westerns aren't so much...

    Western Movies

I don't see why you would, when birth of a nation isn't a western but a "historical" drama. (And a deeply flawed and incredibly racist film). Griffith might be worth his own thread, if this weren't the only feature of his i've seen. Anyway, my girlfriend always takes me to see art films from...

My friends who use windows and don't like itunes use either ephpod or the winamp plugin. Personally, I found ephpod messed with my library when I also connected to itunes on mac. Don't know why you're having crashing problems with itunes- it's been rock solid for me since I started using it 2...

    eBay "sniping"

I've sniped successfully several times before, and I think it's the best tactic for getting something cheap. Which is why I'm on ebay in the first place... So my thing is to set a lowish limit I'm prepared to pay on an item I want to buy. And I snipe using software at that level. I tend not to...

    music / emotional complexity

All music is sad? So it's not so much all music is sad (quite CLEARLY not the case), but appreciative music listeners engage with the sadness in music? I believe it's possible to engage with music in many ways. For the joy and beauty, cereberally, for it's sadness, for the energy and...
