Just read Dai Greatcoat's big boasting speech in chapter 4 of In Parenthesis, absolutely amazing, at least as good if not even better than the most magnificent bits of the Cantos (plus he's much more generous than Pound by providing the notes).

Shaping up to be one of the best books I've ever read this.

Love how when this totally epic majestic speech comes to a close, some soljer pipes up with "cripes-a-mighty-strike-me-stone-cold - you don't say."

It's like this supercharged moment where all of military history and epic literature is channeled through the mouth of this kid (?) stuck in a wretched trench in a misfitting greatcoat.

What's great about the book is how you get both sides - incredible detail related to that specific time and place, and the deeper mythical truth that this is all "eternity unchanging" "a timeless act of fluid dissolution" ( to quote some bits right after Dai Greatcoat's speech)

Sad that you lot would rather talk about tom hanks films, supermarket pizzas, brooklyn hipsters, the 'choon of the day' and make crude wanking jokes than discuss the great masterpieces of modernist literature

Hey buddy you leave Tom hanks out of this, he's a fine actor and deserves some respect, he's been in all the godfathers.

And I had a look at the pictures and made a good point about them, what more do you want?
