    No guilty pleasures

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. There's really very little music that is just beyond the pale and doesn't have serious defenders. Well, I know one - psytrance. Though it's interesting to see Woebot and Blissblog mention it recently. I guess there's also all that terrible mid-80's...

Climate change and environmental collapse-ultimate challenge to the capitalist "real"?

I didn't keep the figures or the results of my calculations but I took the number of vehicles in Brazil and the area they use for ethanol production and then plugged in the American vehicle fleet and found that we would have to use something like 1/2 or 3/4 of the land under cultivation right...

    Record Store Globetrotter

Not at all easy. I had no idea about some of the record stores in my city where I have lived for a while until a fellow record collector told me. Ok, I didn't search that hard but if it was as easy as you say then I would have bumped in to them before.

    italo disco

producers Ok, my question is who are the producers who have consistently produced quality. Italo seems like your usual pop model with a few producers making everything and having a disposable cast of faces to put in front of the music. Nevertheless I haven't really noticed any producers in...

    italo disco

Hahaha...how did you know I liked "Self Control"? I have to turn the volume down when I listen to this mix because it's just too embarassing. I am not missing out, but it is a guilty pleasure.

    italo disco

I found the tracklist to the Jefrey Sfire mix but without artist names. Here it is (I filled in artist names where I could): Patrick Cowley - Menergy Remember (not Gino Soccio) Orient Express Ken Lazslo - Hey Hey Guy Klapto - Mister Game Macaroni Radio Shame IMS - Dancin Therapy M & G - When...

    italo disco

Here's a page with some lyrics http://hometown.aol.de/Maciejsavage/lyrics+A-z.htm a bunch of these are in that megamix (argh...does megamix have to mean that you include a bunch of stupid samples and do stutter edits?) theo posted. Brilliant.

    italo disco

If you can, find the CBS Top 100 from 2004 in zip format. It's a 600 meg file that is a recording of a Cybernetic Broadcasting System's broadcast from December 2004 where they played the user selected top 100. It has about 80% of all italo worth hearing - none (or very little) of that mid 80's...

    jungle vs house.......

Depends on what you count as sub-genre, I don't think House has as many minutely defined subgenres as jungle does. Maybe because the scene is less splintered and the fans aren't as nerdy obsessive. House encapsulates a wider variety of sounds. Either way, house "wins" hands down.

    The Landmark Forum

Yeah, that's the review I had in mind too. I went to the library and got three Pahlaniuk books at once. I finished one and stopped in the beginning of the second and returned them. Then I read that review and agreed wholeheartedly. Palahniuk wrote a pissed off response, it's in the archives...

    Compression

Yeah..but the topic is called Compression I was just going off on a little tangent. I wasn't responding to the article in any way. We've heard it all a million times before and no one disagrees with it. What I got from the piece is that most people are stupid, don't care for music and use it...

questions you are dying to ask but are too scared to b/c of music nerd cred?

It most definitely was sped up. At first the breaks were in the 120's bpm just like hip-hop (Rob Base - It takes two) and starting in late 1991 it started speeding up every month so that by late 1992 tracks were all around 160 bpm. Then they realised that you can now play ragga samples without...

Acid house. It was a gradual transition that tracked the music at raves.

    Compression

Thank god for compression. It rescued us from rickety drum sounds in techno. Whatever you may say about hard loopy techno since '98 or so, the impact of it is so physical, it just grabs you by the balls.

"four to the floor"... my obsession.

I agree very much. A lot of (old) drum'n'bass does sound very gimmicky now and very 90's, very "of its time". The whole sampled breakbeat thing is just very tacky unless done with uncommon grace. It's all about that steady pulse. That's what always surprises me about tribal drumming. I was...

Films you've seen recently and would unreservedly recommend:

Just saw "Sasquatch Dumpling". If you liked Napoleon Dynamite then you will like this as well. It's very similar but a lot funnier. I thought Napoleon Dynamite showed promise but was a bit too weird for weirdness sake and none of the characters were likeable. This movie fixes those problems...

    k punk on adoption

I don't buy your implication that the only identity those children can have is that of their motherland. Their identity isn't formed yet if they are young enough. Many people adopt and really love their adopted children. The alternative is being raised in an orphanage which are terrible places.
