Your most tenuous or absurd claims to fame

My brother jammed with Johnny Depp on guitar for his daughter when she was sick in hospital in London.

Thoughtcrime and extreme pornography in the UK

This is an area I know little about, so thanks for the elucidation. What examples might there be of situations when the act is legal without the specific thought? Obviously I can understand where the crime might be less serious without the thought, e.g. murder vs manslaughter, but what other...

    Shackleton remixing Simian Mobile Disco

Sadly the Pinch mix didn't make it onto a proper release. There are some European 4 track promos floating around if you can track them down... the track's called "I Believe".

Thoughtcrime and extreme pornography in the UK

Yes, as I remember it the Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional to make "virtual" images illegal, but then new legislation was passed which specifically outlaws it. Not sure if it's been tested in court properly?

Thoughtcrime and extreme pornography in the UK

In 2007, the UK government proposed to create new laws making extreme/violent pornography illegal (currently being debated). I'm not sure exactly where I stand on the banning of such images, but I was recently stunned by the following piece of info (from Wikipedia): "Classified works are...

    Moving to SE London- HELP!!!!!

Herne Hill gets my vote - it's close enough to Brixton so you can get stuck into the madness of it, but it's very chilled and residential.

    Shackleton remixing Simian Mobile Disco

Not exactly sure when this is coming out, but it's mighty - further down the minimal techno route. And Shackleton's first ever track with a straight 4x4 kick, so I've been told...

    Current 2 step?

Cheers guys, will look some of these suggestions up... What's El-B up to? His set at FWD last year nearly made me weep.

    Current 2 step?

Because I have dubstep coming out of my ears, bored with tedious halfstep and I miss the shuffle and bounce of 2 step. Milanese, Ardisson etc are ok - but a bit too sonically harsh for my current taste... I guess I should probably be digging for old stuff.

    Record Shops in London

Yeah - big space but not actually that many records... But isn't the problem that in the current climate it's very hard to stay in business just selling music? There's just not enough people who just buy records to keep these places going. The coffee bar/live space may be essential to keep the...

    Current 2 step?

Is there anyone making contemporary good 2 step? I have no idea where I should be looking, so any pointers would be good... But not dubstep!

Hummer's have less end-to-end energy costs than hybrids

I do apologise for my grammar slippage. And yes, I'm fully aware of the ideological bias of the source... Just thought it was interesting. Even if the data is correct, it's still no argument for owning a Hummer - but it might be an argument for not owning a hybrid, at least in the present...

    drug warning stories

Since we've moved onto actual stories that put you off drugs rather than drug-war propaganda, a friend of a friend: Attempted to snort half an E. Forgot the all important crushing up stage, half a pill lodged in his nose over the next day as it slowly dissolved. This is truly vile: On a...

    drug warning stories

PMA is dangerous because it is both a serotonin releaser (like MDMA) and a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). At high levels the concurrence of these attributes creates serotonin syndrome, which can lead to extremely high body temperature with all the associated negative symptoms. Coupled with...

Hummer's have less end-to-end energy costs than hybrids

Hummers have less end-to-end energy costs than hybrids Spinella spent two years on the most comprehensive study to date – dubbed "Dust to Dust" -- collecting data on the energy necessary to plan, build, sell, drive and dispose of a car from the initial conception to scrappage. He even included...

Charles Stross - Record Everything and the Dawn of History

Given that this is not only technologically possible but likely, the implications seem staggering - for culture, society, and even the very idea of what we consider consciousness. What will happen to humans when their memory is almost entirely outsourced to a computer, or even more scary, to...

Charles Stross - Record Everything and the Dawn of History

The Tech Lab: Charles Stross UK science fiction writer Charles Stross, author of novels Accelerando and Singularity Sky, posits a future in which all human experience is recorded on devices the size of a grain of sand. We've had agriculture for about 12,000 years, towns for eight to 10,000...
