Films you've seen recently and would unreservedly recommend:

I saw Bullet Boy last night and was impressed. It may have a lot of cliches and be a one-sided presentation of the black community in Hackney but it captured an atmosphere and wasn't too preachy. It was very watchable and the acting was excellent, especially young Curtis.

Moments you think you're losing your mind.

Service Stations In The GDR Way back when East Germany was a Soviet satellite, I used to stop at a service station in the GDR on the drive from Hamburg to Berlin. It was eerily reminiscent of how UK service stations looked in the sixties. Very few petrol pumps and a shop selling Karo cigarettes...

    Nik Cohn’s “The Trickster”

I also read it over the holidays and thought it was very good. I think his hang-ups are an integral part of the book and made it more readable for me. I prefer it to Patrick Neate's "Where You're At", which is in a similar vein, but without the level of reflection I think is necessary to make...

Is Amanda Platell the most vacuous woman alive?

The answer to the question originally posed is clearly yes. She is a vain, transparently self-serving harpie who deserves to be harpooned.

    Journalists you trust/admire/respect etc

Thanks for that Luka. I genuinely feel physically sick now. I find Erwin James's columns in The Guardian fascinating, as he describes prison life and the transition to the outside world on release. But I can't think of many journalists who really do it for me at the moment.

    Journalists you trust/admire/respect etc

I seem to hate more journalists than I respect. I hate David Aaronovitch for being a lazy, pompous, arrogant twat. I dislike Amanda Platell for similar reasons and the fact that she is the heir apparent to Lynda Lee-Potter. I have a lot of respect for Gary Younge too, and also Darkus Howe and...

Blood And Fire Message Board RIP?

I've felt a lot more at home here than on the B&F site recently. Let's hope the new forum is a bit more focused. I do worry about the mental health of some of the people on there recently. Seriously.

Blood And Fire Message Board RIP?

Thanks John, I was hoping you might come to my aid. Whenever I click on the forum I get a message saying "There are no active forums". Maybe it's a glitch.

Blood And Fire Message Board RIP?

After all kinds of shenanigans recently, the Blood and Fire message board is no longer there. Does anyone know if this is because they are providing a new forum or if they have just decided to pull the plug? Recently it has been getting out of hand on there, with rampant egos, repeated...

    K-punk stones Joss

I don't love her and I certainly don't hate her. I do feel a bit sorry for her though, being put through the music biz mangle when she could perhaps have better developed with a less calculating marketing campaign. But she is bland. Really, really bland.

what did you listen to today?

Slimzee's bingo beats vol.3 mix, which is just the thing for Friday morning. Also can't get Wonder feat. Kano's "What have you done?" out of my head. Top tune.

    what are you reading now?

Is anyone else here into Haruki Murakami? I have become addicted to his work. At the moment I am half-way through 'Dance, Dance, Dance' which is a kind of sequel to 'The Wild Sheep Chase', in that they share the same protagonist and the weird presence of 'The Sheep Man'. I recently finished 'The...
