    Drum'n'Bass 2013 (???)

I keep hearing people try to spark a "D&B is coming/back" story, but I don't really see enough evidence to support that yet. I feel like most of it is careful sniping combined with wishful thinking. Moreover, I feel like the concept of it "coming back" is mostly over. There's plenty of room...

~1992 Rave & Rap mix This is my seventh mix for the Stackin Paper series that we put on a periodic basis as a dual-mix audio CD. The CD has a mega-mix each from Cutups & Keeb$, resident djs at the LAZERCRUNK monthly. This time we went with a "Back to the Future" theme - Todd put together his...

    hardcore classics

it's definitely a slight misconception that gabber has NO breakbeats in it. on some of the most seminal gabber labels, nearly all of the tunes incorporate some breakbeats. but its very rarely the driving percussion. i definitely was pretty *over* any sort of gabber like this for a long time...

    help: London essential record shops

I'm visiting London for the first time next week (from the states), and I'm looking for recommendations on essential spots for shopping. Either specific stores or districts. I'm into: great digging places for used stuff of all types of music, oldskool uk hardcore and 93-94 jungle, dubstep /...

    When genre names morph

i'm not sure it really counts in the broadest sense (hardcore punk didn't change into hardcore techno), but "hardcore" in some ways it was more a descriptor than a genre. within the world of rock it's subtley shifted many different ways. in the electronic world, i first heard it attributed...

    happy hardcore

I def feel you on this. I still dug the post-jungle-split hhc when breakbeat programming was still a big element. When it became trance and ad-infinitum remixes of the same stupid songs i got bored (and kind of mad that something I liked started to suck so bad). Occasionally I do hear new HHC...

    late 90s tech-step

Torque was great for sure, a slice of an era. I still remember the first time i heard the Replicantz remix...so gross. A label that time has mostly forgotten but I really dug back then was Audio Blueprint. Very dark and atmospheric, predated the more techno-influenced techstep sound of the very...

    I'm over techno and hiphop

IMO: if you're getting bored of music, just take a break for a while. Most of the times I'm bored with music it's been from over-exposure, and not simply that there is no good music.

    hip-hop, where to begin?

The Rub's history of hip-hop mix series would be a good place to start for anybody. Hell, even people who claim to be into hiphop would do well to check it out.

    Vampire *fucking* Weekend

This band seems to have reached a critical mass this week - I've heard about them from four different sources. Checking out some MP3's, they sound like something a latter day Paul Simon would be doing. Not my cup of tea, but whatever.

    Goldie returnz...

Most likely you heard that kanji kinetic remix, which sounds nothing like limewax. Limewax's stuff is super intense and stripped down heavy breakcore-influenced drum and bass.

    New Jungle Tekno

There's definitely a whole area to be further explored along these lines. To some degree folks like Trouble & Bass, Kanji Kinetic, L-Vis, AC Slater etc. are doing this. Then there's also the contingent of folks trying to re-create faithful oldskool hardcore style stuff like Darkus, Nervous...

Bauhaus vs. Burial - was dubstep invented in Northampton?

i guest dj'd in a goth club this past weekend and played a bit of dubstep in the mix. it def fits in my version of what goth music in 2007 could be. unfortunately most kids are into the whole minor-key trance metal thing. but hey. i'd def like to hear some dubstep bauhaus refixes.

the disappearance of the black band

This is a good question, but i don't know the answer. Probably the best exception to the rule is the Roots. I kind of wonder why there aren't more bands that are directly inspired by them.

    Idm

I do agree with what people said of IDM being a social kind of thing - the origins in the mailing list and how it's applied in most of my first hand experiences say it was (and maybe still is) a catch all for a wide swath of electronic music. Typically something with an ear to experimentation...

    bassline house

is there a good site for keeping up with good/new bassline releases? or even better, a site that does digital downloads with good content? i have no problem tracking down tons of mixes, but i'm more interested in getting some of the great individual tracks that are in the mixes...
