The rich have probably been the prime vector for the spread. Super mobile, resourceful, multiple properties.
Yeah, you can see this in the number of world leaders and their entourages who have tested positive and had scares - also Dybala, Placido Domingo, Idris Elba etc

it's amazing how reminiscent the UK situation is of perhaps not the Black Death, but the later recurring lesser (but still deadly) outbreaks of plague

everyone who can flees for the country, everyone else shuts themselves inside. very Tudor-era.

the official case and death numbers both doubled there today. in one day.

New York alone might be putting out Italy-style death numbers soon. or worse.

Im glad I read that Barbara Tuchman now, I think it was you who sent me in that direction. Curious to see what 21st century Danse Macabre will look like - but not that curious.

Stolen from twitter - someone not happy with Johnson's lack of decision-making, particularly regarding a lockdown.

We are cursed with an anti-leader, the anti-Churchill: “we shall let them infect each other on the beaches, we shall let them infect each other in the fields and streets.”

trump has repeatedly treated nyc like shit since being elected, both legislatively and in frequent insults to leaders here. he's always had a outer-borough chip on his shoulder over never being accepted by NY society circles, who always mocked him and viewed him as an uncouth, phony real estate blowhard. he lacks empathy in all respects, so doubt he has any fond feeling about the city in particular.

Merkel's in quarantine,

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is in quarantine after a doctor who gave her a vaccine tests positive for coronavirus.

Merkel’s spokesman said the German chancellor, who is 65, was informed about the doctor’s test shortly after holding a news conference Sunday announcing new measures to curb the spread of the virus.

Her spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said Merkel had received a precautionary vaccine Friday against pneumococcal infection.

Seibert said in a statement that Merkel would undergo “regular tests” in the coming days and continue with her work from home for the time being.

And its in the prisons. Being in London for this isn't great but it beats being in prison anywhere. Or in Gaza. Or in a refugee camp. Or in Syria. Or in sanctions hit Iran. Some people will get zero aid and zero sympathy. Just left to die.

The British government were apparently advised to release a bunch of prisoners but refused because they thought it would be political suicide.

Seems to be a relatlvely new development in politics that whenever there is a choice between doing the right thing and the politically popular choice you can completely assume that they will go for the latter. I probably have rose-tinted glasses about the past but surely there were times when leaders actually risked their chance of winning elections by putting the people they were leading first... they actually wanted to do something beyond gaining power as an absolute goal?

sure. see other thread where I speculated on what happens if this really gets loose in developing nations.

being in New York or London beats being in prison or a refugee camp under virtually any circumstances.

Except in the Tudor plague era there (probably) wasn't a third category of thousands of insane fuckers going to street food markets as if it was 2019.

Dunno if anyone's seen Bait, but the news stories about rich people fleeing to Cornwall either makes that seem instantly out of date or terribly relevant. But now they're stealing your health system and your food, not just your housing.

"Contagion changed its former slow and languid pace, and having, as it were, got master of all, the number of deaths increased from three thousand to a peak of eight thousand per week.'
