Nelly/5 Cent

50 Cent was the last time that rap music was the true focal point of London consciousness. As the city became increasingly African a rivalry emerged between them and West Indians. London's cultural output in the 21st century has largely been a conversation between these two groups. Rap has given way to ethno-signalling genres like dancehall and afrobeats as the cities central preoccupation.

Nelly, 50 and Lil Jon are the very beginning of what Corpsey calls 'deconstructed rap'. The former two introduce melody, while the latter shifts rap away from rhythmic contiguity. As Luke notes, it was Eminem who truly killed the rap of the 90's. He reduced it to a parody of itself. A lifeless science.

It sowed the seeds of the Bermondsey bimbo garage revival of the 2010's.

The last innovation in garage. Goodbye to innocence.

UK Funky

The first explicit assertion of african-british identity.

The final hoorah of the hardcore continuum. 20 years of the most beautiful music of all time, made by the most beautiful people of the most beautiful city in the world.

It's a London thing.

The moment we realised American's are all gay, if london wanted real men they better make them itself.

Lollipop was the pioneering mumble rap tune. Autotuned phone-tech dada. Young Thug verbal absurdism. Migos vocal choppage. Even quavo backing vocals. The future in three minutes.

The ascent of Kartel. God amongst men.

In 1978 Jamaica's preeminent musical figure publicly brought the two leaders of the country's main political factions together in an attempt to end their deadly conflict.

In a darkly poetic symmetry 2010 saw Jamaica's prime minister publicly bring together the two leaders of the country's main musical empires together in an attempt to end their deadly conflict.

The war between Kartel and mavado was not just a war between egos, but a battle for the nation's soul. Mavado was overtly christian, soulful and socially conservative. Kartel, an amoral agnostic who toyed with the country's sexual taboos and bleached his skin. Mavado was a man of god. Kartel, as we now know, was a murderer.

The nihilism and bloodshed of this era in jamaica would soon be felt in the streets of london.

We was talking about the twinning of lil Wayne and kartel the other day. There's something really deep there I think. As if it was the same daimon singing through both of them. Some deeply ambiguous spirit of the age.

2010's Road Rap

Hardcore's mania without it's utopia. A retroactive soundtrack to the London riots.

Yet for all of it's aggression and rage and bravado, there was something inherently stupid and fumbling about it. Like that bloke who looted a huge bag of basmati rice.

British rap taking it's first, clumsy toddler steps. we could never have seen the heights of verbal pirouetting the drill generation would later attain.

This is something it would be worth spilling a lot of ink over imo. Kartel is better for me but they were both such amazing examples,of the valve is always open. Life spilling out.
