this was an obscure debate in the french ultra-left in the 50s as to the character of the third world bureaucracies. the French saw it as a kind of world conquering bonapartism, I.E: your conception of barbarism, a force that will erode even social democracy. the communist left argued that the acceleration of the dispossession of agriculture was its sole content.

Looking back this op was started a bit out of context.

apparently before the neolithic revolution (and the specialisation that resulted) group structures weren't particularly hierarchical. so if you were to define communism simply as egalitarian societies in which the means and rewards of production are equitably distributed then you could argue that the 'barbarian ideal' is compatible with communism.

however if communism is defined as a more complex body of thought and a historical phenomenon then obviously it is inherently tied to civilisation. how could it not be?

i'd side with the latter.
