Every genre

pass the sick bucket
I actually had a british kitchen sink realist dream about this last night. instead of agonising over a bint called Ingrid or whatever I was wondering how having heard every genre ever ever I could get into anything new, but at the same time the dream was driving me mad because I'd heard less than 0000.01% of all recorded music in the world.

I spoke to a guy online recently who said he was trying to collect a copy of every single song released commercially from 1950 to 1980. I thought maybe he was trolling but he was earnestly genuine. Such aspirations seem pretty borderline mental illness tbh, but maybe I just lack that dreamer mentality.

If I know I've got to be awake early, but have woken up way too early, I get these anxiety dreams (when in that trying to fall asleep again stage) where I'm compelled to perform some impossible task, that I know full well is impossible, but the compulsion is all so real and demanding it defies any logic your addled mind can through at it. So you're just stuck in this catch 22 of your own creation.

Why those parameters? And released where? In the UK, the US.... the world? I find it quite interesting albeit insane and pointless.

I should made it clear he was making a digital collection and not a physical one. I'm not sure why he chose those years, I think that was mainly where his original interests focused and shit just snowballed. Beyond the time period constraints he just wanted EVERYTHING. No quality filter, no geographical filter, just everything. I couldn't figure out if he was just young and idealistic or a crazy hoarder. He wouldn't be the first fruitloop to attempt such a grandiose scheme

There is this insane desire, I have it, to hear more and more and more, to hear something new all the time, for something new to be created all the time.

Maybe it isn't insane.

I think I had that pre internet but much less so, for obvious reasons. Nowadays I barely give anything a chance to sink in, even when I like it.

This plethora of riches is the gift and curse

no you just need to read some proper porn like ulysses and wank good and long alone without a screen for monastic self-discipline. then you can dedicate your life to music hunting rather than photoshop babes. is your girlfriend called Phyllis, btw?

This compulsion is particularly prevalent in males, maybe for some genetic / memetic reasons. I think it's something to do with deep-seated hunter gatherer programming so you can't really fight it, but the extent you let it take you is the barometer of how crazy you are, or maybe, want to be. A little bit of obsession is ok.

I can certainly relate, but I still view people who want to take it extreme degrees as rather alien. Although what's extreme can be pretty subjective. For example, the Datahoarders who are trying to archive the open Internet, like any library there's an undeniable noble idea in there, but it still sounds like an insane undertaking. But who knows what overlooked cultural stuff will be simply lost in the digital age. There wont be any way for future generations to go back and rediscover overlooked artists of the past because all those myspace, soundcloud or whatever sites will just be lost forever by the delete key of progress.
