William Blake.

Although sometimes going to The Museum at times of peak nonsense can pay off well, me and my brother went to the british museum on acid when we were little and things like the oldest known sculptural depiction of the human form and the reconstruction of the parthenon pair quite well with huge groups of 12 year old french exchange students who mainly want to do cool slides on their heelys

I went today a 9. It's the fourth time I've been and the first time I was able to enjoy it. If you can beat the crowds it's really magical. I'd urge everyone here that can get to London to go. Everyone except Barty. He's too young to eat his greens no point nagging him.

Mosied on down to the Tate today as I was off work, thought it would be nice and quiet for Blake. More fool me!

So instead I looked around the permanent stuff, which I've been reading about in a book about the London painting scene post WW2. Enjoyed staring at Bacon's grotesque altarpiece.

I was sad not to be able to see the exhibition, but quite happy that Blake is clearly so popular.

Came home and just read Bloom on Blake which I might photograph and stick in here to see what Luka thinks.

Quite tempted to cop myself a framed Nebuchadnezzar.

Some painters don't translate well to prints but Blake is obviously an exception.

Reading some reactions in here I'm now regretting not going more and more. 😭

It's a shame there's not a permanent Blake exhibition at Tate, as there is in the Turner wing.

Circumstances mean I'm not gonna be able to go now, what a pisser.

But you are right, there should really be a Blake house or something, with everything on permanent display. Literally everyone agrees he's really good.

There is. But it's very small.

I think part of Blake's popularity is he paints pictures of the sort that people actually like to look at. They're a bit like the book illustrations we all pored over as children. They're magical.

Probably explains why Van Gogh and Picasso are so popular too. There's an element of cartoonishness to their paintings. (Which isn't a criticism.)

I went to Tate modern the other weekend just for something to do before I met some ppl and so much of what's in there is dreary, ugly, brown, grey, rubbish.

Maybe it's the gallery itself too. I keep going there and being disappointed by how dreary it is.

Anyway the point is that Blake is never dreary. I don't feel like people have to dutifully tramp around pretending to like his stuff. Ooh look it's some bricks on the floor how clever. Oh look it's a plain black canvas. How fascinating. Sponsored by Credit Suisse.

It's a ted talk in the shape of an art gallery. And the shops are full of t shirts with the word Feminist written on the front

My conservatism flaring up again.

One interesting thing Bloom says in that essay I uploaded is that Blake was actually a conservative. He harkened back to the English renaissance and to medieval art. It took Wordsworth, Bloom says, to really modernise poetry - not by inventing a new myth but by dispensing with the myth altogether.

There's a modern art gallery in Munich which is so great compared to the Tate Modern.

Tate Modern it feels like they've deliberately picked the most grey brown beige stuff ever made.

The Pompidou is one million times better too in every conceivable way. Tate modern is just a place for good looking art students to check one another out.
