    tbf if you're in the chicken shop they're generally called chips. Even though they are fries. Unless it's a fish and chip shop that sells fried chicken.

    You can get proper chips outside the UK too; sometimes in France or Spain they pop up

    But yeah if you ask for chips here you get crisps. The confusion between fries and chips is often stated but I don't know why people don't address the third part of the triumvirate when discussing this important matter.

    and crisps outside the UK are almost uniformly terrible. One area where we indisputably still rule the world is 'potato'-based snacks. Probably chocolate biscuits too.

    The crisps here are weak, you've really got to scour the supermarkets to find one packet that is any good at all.

    I think it's partly because chicken shops in USA often don't really do fries. KFC in USA started doing them last year, with the original recipe chicken seasoning.
