Phone chess is evil, so addictive. I dl-ed that Magnus Carlsen app and am fed up of being thrashed by a 9 year old.

I know - UK funky to chess doesn't feel like the continuum made the right move.

It's a cliche to say but as soon as everything turned house it got completely swallowed up, boilerroom saw their opportunity and took over the world with it. There was a discussion about co-option before and maybe that is it. People who were making music in the nuum don't want to make rave music anymore, in London anyway. Or do they? Literally have no idea haven't lived in the UK for 7 years and I don't listen to music anymore.

Both good points. Everything is now potential 'content' to be monetised and branded.

The irony of this accompanying text to a recent Boiler Room documentary is almost stunning:

Boilerroom, RA and any other major monopoly are tumors on the scene. But if you remove em at least double will grow back. It's a damn hydra.

One of the reasons the government went to war with rave is because it wasn't putting money in he pockets of traditional power blocs e.g. the alcohol industry. If the yoof decide they don't want to invest in those monopolies they will create something of their own, just as radio one and commercial radio gave birth to the Pirates.

You can't force boiler room on people. Yoof energy is massive, atomic fission hormonal spunk energy. This generation is a bunch of losers but the one after probably won't be.

Technology just coddles everyone so much now, though - you don't have to leave your room to have "it all" on a platter. And music is part of that platter, but I doubt it's as important as it was. Whereas video games, which were a bit of a nerdy fringe activity when I were a lad, are now absolutely huge, communal activities.

Perhaps there'll be a rise against the machine, ala. the Matrix, especially when the Internet is really locked down by corporations (if it isn't already).

I think this outlook veers very close to an End Of History prognosis. Dissensus has an inexplicable fondness for diagnosing the End of History. People declaring the End Of History have a track record as dismal as that of people forecasting imminent apocalypse.

Sitting in a room numbing yourself with prescription medication is not going to hold lasting appeal. The sense of lack and panic and lust and desire will all break through at some point. The sense of missing out, basically.

David Deutsch did a Ted talk recently about how the universe, after nearly 14 billion years of slumber, is only now waking up.
initial blast of novelty when stars, black holes, planets were invented... then nothing until life emerged... then nothing until knowledge in the minds of humans and our endless, antic novelty.

Because the next generation is rarely content to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors. They are able to identify the mistakes and (over)correct. Brcause conditions change. Because what was novel to their forebears is old hat to them. For any number of reasons.

I hope you're right!

Ofc technology is getting better and better and pretty soon you'll have stuff like VR and sex robots.

Thing is, I don't see all this stuff as "BAD" necessarily. Just an alteration of where people are getting their dopamine.

So we have to wait for a generation that might do something, in a landscape where their very ability to imagine something different, have their own thoughts and dreams and even have an appetite for something different is being eroded by a tailor made, force fed media delivery system aka the internet, which we know is in no hurry to slow down. And in many ways is only just getting started. Idk man. Hard to see it happening anytime soon.
