Landscape as a series of stagesets,

that's exactly what it is. the word becomes as moody and as potent as art. you can actually live film noir or a horror film or an art film. the world absorbs your state of mind and reflects it back at you.

Threads reminding me how much it meant to me

people through windows aren't really human anymore. they're just these autonomous drones. cars become automated, they're not being driven.

They're also completely unselfconscious you get an unmediated view of them as they rage or daydream or distractedly pick a bogey from a nostril it's intensely intimate, raw

this weird thing where you see people making the bed or lazing around watching telly and you can inhabit there warmth and there cosiness for a split second. you can inhabit their life for a little bit. you're in that room. an incredibly intimate understanding of somebody who doesn't even know you're there. doesn't even know you exist.

it's what omniscience must feel like.

My mates and I used to walk out to this crag to pick 'shrooms back in the day. We could never be arsed to walk all the way back though, we'd just call a taxi out to the middle of nowhere and say we were hiking or whatever. We found some horrible looking British porn on VHS in my mate's older brother's room once and decided to take it with us and leave it stood on top of a rock like a little monolith.

version's the leo of provincial english seediness. in much the same way you can't mention a pivotal moment in US musical history that leo wasn't a central part of, there's no grubby sexual oddity that version doesn't have some personal anecdote about.

the situationists wrote about walking, did anyone ever got into that? i have been meaning forever because it sounds well interesting.

Dérives are necessary, according to Situationist theory, because of the increasingly predictable and monotonous experience of everyday life in advanced capitalism.[3] Debord observes in his Introduction to a Critique of Urban Geography:

The sudden change of ambiance in a street within the space of a few meters; the evident division of a city into zones of distinct psychic atmospheres; the path of least resistance that is automatically followed in aimless strolls (and which has no relation to the physical contour of the terrain); the appealing or repelling character of certain places—these phenomena all seem to be neglected. In any case they are never envisaged as depending on causes that can be uncovered by careful analysis and turned to account.

i feel like i've been in and come out the other side, without actually understanding anything, like ink off silicone. like someone was saying in the blake thread, it's just tea towels and keyrings now.

Basically, how I see it, situationism, situationist thought and so on, it's like the end of the 60s, it's very explosive, very end of world type writing and imaginings. All the foundational texts by the French crew are very hard to get into (this just me, others might have understood more than me) and the things that have travelled the most are the very pithy throwaway bits (like the two dick cowboys and the 'under the pavement, the beach'). Cos at its core it was about totally removing yourself from the spectacle of society and showing it for the capitalist fallacy illusion that it is, but taken to the logical extreme this turned into proper anti society actions such as those by red army in Germany and angry brigade in this country. And the rest just became recommodified into the culture machine, the best bits of which are punk things or tom vague zines.

So now I just feel wary about the whole scene I suppose, cos it's just another part of things, rather than anything with any actual bite.

In terms of walking specifically, their that Ng was about deconstructing the city, by not obeying it's lines and rules, or questioning it, which is all well and good, but I think the original idea was to do this in order to mount a serious critique of things, or at least show something, but what it's ended up as is people just having a bit of a jolly in order to get out of the house. And maybe stick up some stencil graffiti. So the edge is lost. I mean this is just my view of things. I feel like I've gone through the process myself, I'm not really criticising anyone or anything except myself.

Went for a 'beating the bounds' walk today, a circuit from my house to the edge of the metropolitan council and motorway, then back again through some woods and along a road with no pavement. It's a walk I devised for myself as a teenager, and did regularly for a few years, once with my cousin, maybe some other people. Not done it for years. Found some really good faded paint hieroglyphics on the motorway barriers. Was photographing and drawing them for ages.

Saw a few odd people as well, including a couple of lads who looked like they had walked out the 1970s, scrawny and too old looking children. But the oddest was in the woods, I found a clearing where someone had had a biggish fire recently, then there was an outcrop where you got a bit of s view, so I went over, and sitting under a tree is a Buddhist monk! In full robes etc, praying.

I just like to walk the same route over and over again for months, to get that sense of place and rootedness. Meshing in the actual pathways with yr neural pathways.

Never got into the whole hiking up mountains thing. Feels a bit performative and jolly. But that's probably just inverted snobbery on my part
