For desi, you need to check out Unda Da Influence by Dr Zeus, all three RDB albums (Rhythm Dhlol Bass, Unstoppable, Danger), Pardesi dhola by Satwinder Bitti, Virsa by Tigerstyle, especially Mele Vich Vajda Dhol, which is an essential tune, Reality Check by Jassi Sidhu, if only for Agg and Ranja, although his new album, No Strings Attached, is pretty good, too. Also brand new and worhg checking out are Dildarian by Amrinder Gill and and album called Dholicious (awful name but good) by Mentor Kollektiv. Check this place out, it's very cheap and delivers fast: www.asiansounds.com

Asian Sounds is awesome, the CD albums are cheaper than grime 12"s. i bought Satwinder Bitti's LP on dave's recommendation but wouldn't recommend it though.

Specialis and Tru Skool's LP 'Word Is Born' is essential, as is Northern Light's 'Sparked.'

Lata Mangeshkar is great too.

Haha, boliyaan by satwinder bitti is an absolutely brilliant track and she's got a really beautiful voice, too. I can see why some people might not be sold on the whole of Pardesi Dhola, though. It's totally traditional bhangra, full of overblown romantic Bollywood schmaltz and I really like that. Thing is I'll also happily happily recommend whole albums on the basis of one killer track if they're priced between 6 and 8 quid!

i like south indian classical music

n ramani
vadya lahari
kadri golpanath
yesudas
l shankar
several others whose names are too complicated for me to remember/spell

south indian film music is good too but i dont know the name of any artists apart from this female singer called chithra. i dont usually appreciate people's voices but her voice is really really beautiful

as for non-south indian music
ali akbar khan
zakir hussain
ananda shankar
shakti

there's this australian tamil singer called susheela raman whom i don't really like but (i think) is quite critically acclaimed

I've only recently discovered Indian classical music, after being recommended to the 4 CD and book The Raga Guide (http://tinyurl.com/z8o95) which has brief but well done performances of 74 major Hindustani raga, along with some accompanying notes, explanation and illustrations. You'll probably want some more in depth treatments as well, but this gives a pretty useful overview.

Thanks for the help. A lot of this stuff looks very interesting I'm looking into getting my hands on it. Has anyone seen the movie Ghost World? The intro song looks like it's from some Indian film circa 1960 and there's definitely a deep rock & roll feel to it. Is there anything else like this out there (preferably something from the same era)?

how'd you like this? not what I thought it would be - Indian 60s psych in the vein of the Cambodian Rocks series (Vietnamese 60s Psych), but it sounds like the other way around - western 60s psych with Indian influences. thoroughly enjoying it though. Some of the tracks are so good... 3rd song on Vol 3 for instance.

See if you can hunt down the soundtrack for a classic film called: umrao jaan - by muzzafar ali of lucknow...early avadhi nawabi feeling to it...a purple patch for brilliant music.

soundtrack to MF Husain's recent film - i think A.R Rehman was on the buttons is brilliant too.

being muslim im all far qawali and our sufi heritage - abida parveen, nusrat fateh ali khan, sabri brothers are brilliant.

sorry for being a nit picker, and doubly sorry if I'm wrong, but aren't these artists Pakistani?

raises interesting questions about interaction and cross pollination between Qawali and Indian Classical through the ages though... care to enlighten?

I don't think I've ever heard Islamic music from India... strange as it must exist, because of the small percentage Muslim population there.

______________
nevermind. this was just cleared up by a friend:

pakistan was india until 40 years ago, qawwali is a much older tradition, predates the partition.

for instance ar rahman, the foremost name in bollywood scores today is muslim, and brings in elements of muslim music

there's also ghazals, which isn't really exactly devotional, but it is very culturally muslim, based on urdu poetry.
