dunno if its just me but tv docus seemed to be better... in the good old days. or just more inventive/less standardised. watched an old south bank docu on vivienne (tempted to write 'big dog' here) westwood recently which was really great and quite interestingly done. one of the best of its kind imo.

Howard Goodall's 'How Music Works' was absolutely incredible.

Yeah, Goodall is a legend, makes it easy for a thicko like me to understand the basic elements. Also some interesting history in those shows ie when the pilgrims made the crossing to America and the songs developed a positive vibe.

I'm like the first poster, love most music docs. I remember buying the 80's Dancing In The Street on VHS for about 16 quid. (Don Letts too BTW) Bambaataa, Flash, De La Soul, The Orb, Derrick May etc. Awesome. There's a bit where New Order cut 'Confusion' with Arthur Baker and play it off a reel in The Funhouse in NY which is great.

(start_of_predictable_sniping)Yes, doesn't he know that's Dubstep! (/end_of_predictable_sniping)

really, i thought it was miami bass, but then i am american.

'gimme shelter' is unbeatable as is the mayles brothers beatle's first tour of the states doc.
the song remains the same is beatable with a big stick.

i also like those three decline of western civilisation films alot.

Standardisation is exactly right. Documentaries nowadays all fit a concise mould and it's rubbish.

bit of a long shot and totally on a tangent but there was this old ch4 docu from the 80s - a famous one i think - about afghanistan. i taped it (as on vhs) a few years back when it was on more 4 but cant remember the title. grizzleb, any ideas?

I remember a Bukem documentary from probably 1995/6???

I remember finding that whole world of clubbing so thrilling as a 13 year old, and I was mystified by the idea of someone hearing some music, and then not being able to stop dancing, even after they left the club...(as seen in the doc...) At that point I didn't know about recreational drugs! How innocent I was...:slanted:

On a different note, I recently made my first radio documentary... about... Tiesto. ha.

There are some interesting bits in there though even if you don't like trance (me included), hearing what he was into prior to his trance obsession (some cool 'new-beat' stuff), the role of Sven Vath in that whole movement, the fact he has an unknown engineer/producer who might/might not be heavily involved in his success, and some of the sacrifices his success has required...

Going out in a couple weeks.

That's quality man, well in! How did you get into that? What station/broadcaster is it on?

it's going out on Radio 1, July 12 at 9 i think. I work for a production company, that got it commissioned, and then I got asked to make it.

In the past all my ideas for docs have been too specialist/london-centric apparently! But, I reckon I'll try pitching some more stuff, as it was a good experience... despite not having a life for a month or 2...

That's excellent, well done. Yeah I suppose it's about plugging away really and trying to get stuff done that you really want to.

if i could post a link to this i would but David Keenan torn them a new one in The Wire for being nothing but a bunch of references to old records so i'm guessing they do
