Hmmm.. Sorry, but Dervishes is IMHO his most overrated. I own every single LP and love them all, but Dervishes is just not that special and orignal. One great LP people forget to check is the chinese version of In C, with chinese traditional orchestra and instruments, supervised by Riley himself.

I also have a recording of a 30 mn radio performence he did in duo with Don Cherry, and that is indeed amazing.

Today, I was checking all my Nik Pascal LPs, and even if a tad on the new age side, there were some nice surprises :)

Re: You're No Good

It's what I think about when I think of Terry Riley, and I'd rather listen to it over anything else he made pretty much. Not his seminal work or anything, just my favorite. I remember liking "Reed Streams" a lot too.

It has been a while since I've listened to this stuff, I think I need to pull some out now.

Maybe time to check La Monte Young again if ever too ;)

The WellTuned Piano 5XLP probably is my favorite piece of piano music ever.

whoa whoa whoa, many Riley mentions but nobody brings up "You're No Good"? Shame!

I would say my favorite piece in this realm is Robert Ashley's "Automatic Writing". One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever made in my opinion, sound coming from other rooms. Also "The Wolfman" by him is like the first harsh noise ever made.

wolfman here-http://www.ubu.com/sound/ashley.html big influence on William Bennett

and you're no good soundtrack bizzniss http://www.ubu.com/film/payne-relph_mixtape.html

those into Riley, microtones, etc, are required by the invisible fundamental laws of the multiverse to download and listen to this largely unknown out of print recording by the late and amazing unsung hero of just intonation:

Heard it when it came out. It's nice, but it only came out on CD, which is IMHO a terrible format for this kind of music. La Monte Young! Or Early Charlemagne Palestine for a more cheeky and honest take ;)

Oh... I guess you must be into Stephen Scott, right?

Stephen Scott is the precursor of the bowed piano : he even fronts the Bowed Piano Ensemble with 3 or 4 Albums on New Albion

Cheers

Amongst the shows at OTO over the next seven days, Iancu Dumitrescu, the enfant terrible of Spectral Music, returns for two evenings of primordial sounds and spectral explosions. The first evening will be dedicated to ensemble work and will be performed by the latest incarnation of the Hyperion Ensemble, consisting of some of the UK’s finest improvising musicians and conducted by Dumitrescu. The second evening, Charismatic Numbers, will be dedicated to small groups and will include a rare cello solo set played by Dumitrescu himself.

Pretty generic Oto fare. Bowing scraping squeaking creaking wheezing banging occasional crescendo. You didnt miss much
