Founded in 1880, Alpha Boys’ School is a non-profit educational and vocational training school for at-risk boys. Of the vocations taught at Alpha Boys’ School, music has been the most prolific. Alpha’s past students have influenced the direction of jazz, ska, reggae and dancehall worldwide. The celebrated careers of jazzmen Joe Harriott and Dizzy Reece, ska pioneers the Skatalites, roots reggae vocalist Leroy Smart and Grammy-nominee Winston Foster, aka Yellowman, all began at Alpha not to mention instrumentalists such as David Madden, Glen Dacosta, Leroy Wallace, Nicholas Laraque, Conrad Pinnock and Damon Riley who have anchored some of the most respected touring bands and recording projects.
