The curated lifespan

A chap from my college launched himself from a rooftop bar on being made redundant by his bank in his mid-twenties, saying that the rest of his life would be even more downhill from there were he to plough on.

A middle-aged woman killed herself for no other reason than that life had lost its "sparkle", as it does for most people.

Once assisted dying is available people will start to think about giving their life an appropriate shape, ending it on a high rather than just fizzling out.

Enjoy your weekend.

I can just picture it now: fresh-faced youngsters with colourful flags and signs saying 'my death, my choice', 'lifeblockers are my future', 'die young leave a beautiful corpse', 'better dead than under a Tory government' etc. - just another way for a certain demographic to hasten its own extinction.

It's certainly a possibility, but I'm not sure whether the curatorial impulse is strong enough to override the will to live. I think a lot of people will continue to cling on for as long as they can. I can see a certain kind of artist or public figure doing it, but I think for the majority it'll remain a last resort dictated by quality of life, health, and so on.

I hope so.
