Rolling UFC/MMA Thread

It's been huge for a while, but it feels bigger than ever what with Trump's presence and the influence of Rogan's podcast. I think there's still more money in the upper levels of boxing, but the cultural momentum's with Dana White and co. The Jones-Stipe fight the other night did seem like a bit of a joke, but not to the extent an elderly Mike Tyson fighting a YouTuber on Netflix was.

The whole thing seems to exist on almost another planet to the rest of mainstream culture too as so many of the big names are genuinely awful people and it's just accepted. We've just seen McGregor found liable for rape in civil court, Jon Jones is a domestic abuser and injured a pregnant woman in a hit and run, and there are plenty of issues with other fighters too. It's unsurprising given their profession, but the bubble they exist in's quite surreal.

There are moves which defy belief live, thinking Korean Zombie getting uppercut roundhouse elbowed right on the button

Freeze-framed for ouch, brutal slugfest too and a monstrous-victorious finale, mental fight

imagine the charles factor to be plentiful at most events

A booze, weed, cocaine and steroids environment, although you've got the Rogan psychedelic component for a bit of flavour and bro-y mind expansion.

Schaub is a big hate figure online for whatever reason, I think because being friends with Rogan gave him an in to be a terrible stand up comedian

Anyway, goes to show what's waiting for most of these guys/gals down the line

I'm rather callous about it because I figure you have to know the risks if you're going to get punched in the head for a living, but I suppose the worst thing about it is that it endangers other people because you've got these highly trained warriors walking around thinking that their Alexa is God and its telling them to kill their family so they can go to heaven faster

It's a combination of that and him doing a podcast with Bryan Callen and Chris D'Elia.

They're not all making millions off it either. A bunch of them have day jobs. It's bad enough ending up with all those health issues when you've got a mountain of cash to retire on, but the thought of taking that sort of damage and having to go back to work full time once you hang the gloves up is grim as fuck.

There's a Nate Diaz interview from a few years back where he's asked whether he gets excited before a fight and he drops the bravado and cuts quite a tragic figure.

slow motion adds more to views of precision (and luck), although the collisions rippling outwards can be grotesque

dunno about best, comprehensive and demonstrative enough perhaps

another for slomo has to be Askren Masvidal just for the calculating execution of it, i don’t know how much of the pre-planning for it is now lore over analysis but grim/funny viewing re the paradox of legalised violence and people getting sparked the fuck out

ps why does the music always have to be stupid

A few of my friends are bang into UFC and have been for years, I've many times had to sit there for six hours mostly on my phone while they watch it

Once in a while I'd get into a fight (helps if you bet on it) but for the most part it's like sport is in general for me, just something to have on

I regret this actually and I also surprised myself by getting excited about some olympic events this summer perhaps there's hope for me after all

I doubt I'd enjoy watching a full card. I just watch the highlights on YouTube and read the UFC subreddit. You ever played the PlayStation games?

My brother had a few competitive Muay Thai fights, but he's packed it in now because he doesn't want to risk the head injuries. It definitely doesn't seem worth it if you aren't even making any money. All those knees and elbows.
