Going Feral

When the car was written off in an accident, the only place he could think to go was Lone Fir Cemetery, a 30-acre plot of 25,000 graves in the south-east of the city. “I figured everyone else would be too scared to live in there,” he says. “So I climbed over the fence and I lived in a bush in the graveyard for a year.”

It was around this time Evan began painting his face white.

I think there are plenty of spaces for this sort of existence in modern society - not necessarily 100% dropping out as a graveyard ghoul. but opting out of some of the modes of regular life

all normies follow an identical lifestyle, but the abnormies veer off in a multitude of directions,

i suspect there is a strange and important sense of self-satisfaction at rejecting the norm, finding your own way - smackheads for example might justify their appalling existence by privileging self-indulgence over the trappings of regular life, and feel like they have cracked the code

every cultural moment was conceived by someone bunking off, obvs, but more than that, to be a social activist, to make things change you need to get out from the grind, on a practical level having a job, home, family, may not be compatible with devoting yourself to exceptional goals

do you get me?

Beyond the grid

Beyond the garden, the wilderness

Thomas Oles:
> For most of urban history, land costs in walled cities were highest near the center, where the marketplace, temples, and public buildings were located. This lateral hierarchy of value meant that living on the edge was usually the cheapest way to inhabit the fortified city.

Marginalization a literal process. To be near a gate gives access to the outside, gives vision and sensory access. To be near a center is to be equidistant, to be a focal point, to be better protected, insulated, nestled

have lived in:

buses
squats (lost count)
a van
a tree-house
tents (over one brutal winter perma-jonesing)

under 35 you can weather all manner of conditions but there’s a threshold or cut-off point and if you miss it, you’ll die feral

clean water and sources of power (old genny in cellar “just in case”) etc require more innovative approaches, wasn’t there a quiz recently on such @sufi ?

feral and local can be combined too - WV trailer parks selling h trying not get killed/stabbed/shot/arrested/maimed
