In the King James version of the Bible, Isaiah 34.14 informs us: “The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the screech owl also shall find for herself a place of rest”. The Amplified Bible is more explicit, translating the above verse as: “The creatures of the desert will encounter jackals, and a hairy goat will call to its kind; Lilith will settle there and find herself a place of rest.”

It's because of Shakespeare that the stereotypical owl call is supposed to be "tu-whit, tu-woo", but this is a conflation of two separate calls; the female tawny owl's high-pitched "kee-vit", and the male's much lower "hoo-hoo."
