One more, because lord knows I've been prolific as of late.
This mix is an edit of the DJ set I played on the chill stage at this year's Soundwave.
I went into the weekend with a very specific mandate creatively. I wanted to treat it like church, so to speak. No need for overt spirituality. Just passion and what better way to kick off the morning than with a selection of tunes which were full of love, joy, devotion and positive vibes? As DJs, we get so wrapped in the segueing and the blending and the selection that I wanted to simplify. If you're gonna accept the chance to be a conduit, some days you just gotta let your spirit flow.
Some of the choices are pretty self explanatory: Bjork, Nuyorican Soul. Jeff Buckley's cover of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is for me, an interpretation of the greatest love song I think I've ever heard. I listen to it daily, it's fucking awesome. Stuff like Download's "Beehatch" or Red Snapper's "Lo Beam" may not be immediately apparent in connection with my ideas but they are personal touches that speak to my heart, they are indeed my tools for joy. And then there is Godspeed You Black Emperor's "Moya", a song that I have played at every Soundwave I have been to because its epic beauty is pure, unfiltered joy.
I hope you enjoy it and I hope you can take away even just a touch of the love that went in and out through the mixer Sunday morning.
