View Full Version : greatest vinyl bargain

about 5 years ago i found Goldie's Terminator EP (http://www.discogs.com/Metalheads-Terminator/release/32034) on Synthetic Hardcore for 75p in an Essex charity shop. What's yours?

The winner is the one with the greatest value now/price paid ratio. 30/0.75 puts the opening benchmark at 40 :)

That was a good find!

Picked up an original pressing of the first ever reggae tune: Larry Marshalls' 'Nanny Goat' in JA for about 10p.

I've sold most of my records which are worth serious money except the reggae ones...

I got Horsepower - Gorgon Sound for 50p around 2002.

The allegedly ltd to 93 copies Current 93 album "Christ and The Pale Queens" with a staff discount at the Rough Trade Warehouse when I briefly worked there.

So I think that would be about 10 / 300 according to discogs (http://www.discogs.com/sell/list?release_id=103121&ev=rb). Which is a ratio of 30.

But I ain't got them any more, sold 'em both for printing stuff about astronauts and bass culture, innit.

Maybe not the most amazing in terms of pounds spent to resale value, but for sheer quality Heart Of The Congos/Go Feet pressing in an HMV sale for 1.99 still makes me smile 25 years later.

and for money spent to money received, I still can't figure out why someone on eBay gave me 65 for a 90s reissue of an Impact 7" by Peter Broggs I've forgotten the name of.

83 die-cut sleeve Blue Monday 30c in a charity shop 60/30c = 200

I got given a record by Rico Rodriguez that was released on two-tone which seems to be valued at around 100 because of its rarity, whether people will pay that much for it I don't know. I guess the early DMZ's aswell need to get round to selling them, aswell as the fat freddys drop remix which ive not seen for sale anyhwere but im geussing by the ridiculous prices of the other DMZ stuff could get a fair wack for. Not bargain buys tho.

Reggae-related vinyl is just about the only thing that still sells really well on eBay. I got (I think) 110 for an old w/label dub album of his in pretty average nick a few years back.

27-05-2010, 03:29 PM
I paid 75p for Alco's Threads Of Life which some dude wants 1,236.99 for on a collector's site. I wrote a thing (http://www.umbusiness.co.uk/?p=620) on my blog about it. If any of you lot want to buy it I'll knock a tenner off the above sum because we're all mates on Dissensus. :p

Seriously though, it is FOR SALE, if anyone's passing through...

I haven't made any great purchases really but my garage collection has appreciated

Confetti doubles 12 - ebay price 60 - http://www.discogs.com/sell/list?master_id=181861&ev=mb
Enchanted Rhythms Double pack 12 - ebay price 60 - http://www.discogs.com/sell/list?release_id=146451&ev=rb

Benga Skank goes for a bit I think, got the Blue version - http://www.discogs.com/sell/list?master_id=15304&ev=mb

Mates got a dubplate of Creeper Devils mix, that could fetch a bit perhaps?

Silly money really

Everything on confetti is ridiculous money now

I just paid 9 for a copy of that last week! Still not a bad price...

My best find was a mint white label copy of Groove Chronicles' Stone cold for 2.99 in a local Oxfam. Fuck knows what it was doing there, I don't think garage ever really took off in Newcastle. I sold it a week later on ebay to some radio station for 30 cos I was skint at the time and I assumed it would see a vinyl reissue at some point. Regret that now...

Oh, got a copy of Abstrac & Lady P's 'Love in dub' on Confetti records for 50p in a shop in Carlisle, I suppose that might be worth a few bob now. Hanging on to that one though!

27-05-2010, 05:54 PM
Bought Coki - Officer for 7 at a Newcastle record store recently, not quite sure they knew what they were selling

27-05-2010, 07:17 PM
I found two copies of Ice Rink at a local shop a few months ago for 9 each

crazy considering i dont think they ever stocked any other grime records, it must have been for years on that crate

27-05-2010, 09:24 PM
Gospelfolk - Prodigal. 2.50 in a glasgow record shop, book price 200, popsike price 90-150.

Smaller ratio but still mental: Mandy Morton and Spriguns - Magic Lady (signed copy). 20 in Oxfam. Unsigned copies go for 2-400, fuck knows what the sigs would add.

27-05-2010, 09:26 PM
original white label of "l luv U" (even says its wiley on it!), got in a bundle of tunes and worked out at about 2

I'll interprete greatest as a combination of most valuable according to the interwebs & on my wantlist for ages.
About a year ago in a New Zealand sales bin...
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Volume II (3xLP) - for 10$NZ.. which is about 4 quid.
Then this up in a sales bin in a Middlesborough shop a few years ago.
Lucky dip as it has no paper labels & no info sheet. I think I paid 8 quid for it so the ratio is not that great.

In terms of a recent decent ratio:
2NZ$, so about 1/50 if you take the cheapest discogs offer...

hmm... I love sales bins.

28-05-2010, 12:00 AM
oh oh oh. also, bought second copies of DMZ 05 & 06 as I just couldn't leave them in the sales bin store for 5NZ$ each & my original copies are over in europe.
was grinning stupidly for quite a bit afterwards.

Universal Indicator Red picked up for 50p at a record fair goes for about 30 on discogs (http://www.discogs.com/sell/list?release_id=16817&ev=rb)

The first Gescom E.P. on Skam bought about 5 years ago for a pound and goes for about 20 or more (http://www.discogs.com/sell/list?release_id=195&ev=rb)

Jiri.Ceiver - Osiac picked up for 2 goes for about 20 on average (http://www.discogs.com/sell/list?release_id=18754&ev=rb)

Tectonic 001 DJ Pinch & P Dutty - War Dub / Alien Tongue I paid 1 for a copy at MVE and it goes for 20 plus (http://www.discogs.com/sell/list?release_id=436731&ev=rb)

28-05-2010, 04:46 PM
Pete UM trumps all!

i picked up Kenny Dixon's Emotional Content 12" for a quid and sold it the next week for 40.

and also bought the first pressing of Ron Hardy's 'Sensation' for a fiver, which in the past has sold for $$$. this year Rush Hour have since reissiued it, so i'm guessing this devalues the orginal somewhat.

"Reggae-related vinyl is just about the only thing that still sells really well on eBay"
Dunno about that, this did pretty well in January.

(if you can't see the link it's Andrew Brown - You Made Me Suffer and it went for $5656)

We did this thread on vinylvulture and a load of people had found some crazy stuff - but one guy is a rare book dealer and the books he'd found made the other things look like small change. Think he found a book worth thirty thousand pounds or something.

28-05-2010, 06:08 PM
i found a load of those phillips silver series records in a shop in truro for about 2 each - same shop the complete esg discography for less than a tenner, i used to buy stuff from there and sell it in london when i was younger - igot a pandit pran nath record i sold for alot there for a few quid too - t's closed now sadly. I sold a promo tape i was given for 60 last year. Found an orginal copy of heart of the congos for a quid when someone was clearing out their house and selling some records on the street, picked up a copy of 'lets work' by prince on 12" for under a tenner.

28-05-2010, 06:51 PM
a couple of years back i picked up a collection of about 10 network 23 / spiral tribe 12"s from the 25p bargain bin of the m&ve in greenwich. that was a pretty good haul. sold for about 50 - 100 each on ebay at the time. more recently found a bunch of cold rush / planet core 12"s for a quid a pop on deptford market - kept hold of all those.

a couple of months back picked up a copy of horace andy 'in the light dub' lp original ja pressing from a local boot fair for 50p. that goes for a few bob according to popsike.com

i tend to do alot of my record shopping in thrift stores/yard sales/etc, so i have gotten alot of hundred dollar records for 1-3 dollars a pop... which is often how it is... the guy who found that VU acetate paid a buck for it and sold it for 20,000 or whatever and went on a trip to asia with the profits!

i haven't done that good and i don't wanna blow up any of my spots, but i will say i bought a rare psych record for a buck and sold it for 1400... only to see if i had held onto it for a while longer, a copy recently sold for about double that! however, at the time i needed money and that 1400 paid a lot of bills and rent!

i really am uncomfortable holding on to any records worth more than 100-200 dollars, b/c i feel like i will drop em or whatever and it's just money down the drain...

i got this for a buck (orig black label mono) and i am not selling it, as it is just too beautiful:

I haven't found that much valuable stuff, diggng around - quite a few interesting records, and too much chud I don't listen to, best monetary value find would be Donovan's HMS Donovan - beautiful gatefold, worth about 40 upwards.

Biggest disappointment was finding this:

... with the wrong record in the sleeve! Gutted!

Guys over on vinylvulture/verygoodplus.co.uk regularly find ridiculous stuff, still, but it's all about the hours you put in. Can't be arsed to spend my weekends that way myself.

29-05-2010, 06:47 AM
Here's the Donovan cover:

... it was 95p.

01-06-2010, 05:29 PM
just picked up gansta4life/asbo/bassface001/dmz6/10/11 and a bunch of other stuff for $2 ea not the greatest in here, but they've all sold (as i've got doubles spare the bassface 001) for $30+ each...got $55 for the loefah dmz one.

pretty good score in my book though ; )

The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu "1987", the album that was recalled/masters destroyed. Got it for free from a clueless friend of a friend who worked at a commercial radio station. the guy somehow had gotten a copy sent to him when it was first released, I said "hey, I've been looking for this," and he said "i don't even know what it is, take it."

Watching Windows: DJ Die's Gnarley mixes.

Got it in the bargain bin at a video and music exchange for 2 quid. Those guys normally know there shit, had a proper 'cant believe im getting away with this" face on.

Goes for 20 and up methinks

02-06-2010, 12:51 PM
not really a huge bargain but i picked up black sabbaths paranoid - an original pressing - for 3. was pleased about that.

03-06-2010, 12:50 PM
Oh yeah i just remembered I got a KMD (mf doom) white label for 1

I dont know if its worth anything or how rare it is.

I too had that feeling like, 'you are actually going to sell me this for one English pound?!'

Love these kinds of stories but this one has to take the biscuit:

The disco biscuit?

One for the 80s electro-soul thread anyway.
