I suppose it's conceivable that a drug-naive (in both senses) teenager might die from MDMA alone if the pills are unusually strong and they don't know how to look after themselves properly wrt water, regular breaks etc. But I suspect adulterated gear is behind the great majority of these deaths. It's the best possible argument for legalization or at least decriminalization but I can't see it happening any time soon with these cunts in charge of the place.

The War on nightlife began in New York didn't it? We're always years and years behind that lot. It's going on in Sydney too as they've closed down all of Kings Cross in what is presumably a massive land grab. Is this just the logic of capitalism or is it the illuminati or is the illuminati part of the logic of capitalism?

There are some banging pills around at the moment, for sure (er, I heard), but I doubt they're stronger than what was around ca. 1990.

But that's beside the point, because fatal ODs on MDMA alone are virtually unheard-of, if one has ever happened at all. The tragic spate of deaths over the last few years is due to pills with PMA or PMMA in them, which are many times more toxic than MDMA. Doesn't stop the press blaming it all on "killer ecstasy", of course.

Were the deaths at Fabric unequivocally drug-related, anyone know?

I heard there are pills which are intended for breaking in two and are effectively a double dose in a single tablet.
I also heard that taking them can lead to getting stuck up a very tall tree at 7am with no clear plan on how to get down.

NYC's nightlife (and overall underground culture) decline began when rudy guiliani was mayor (1993-2001), then 9/11 gave mayor bloomberg the leverage to continue the crackdown and "clean up" that drove up real estate values and further welcomed the monied elite to manhattan. culture was pushed out to brooklyn in the early 2000s, but now even much of that is too expensive to support many clubs or artists.

I'm surprised our resident Illuminati-buster luka hasn't observed that Fabric fabric london 2012 logo.jpg probably got shut down because its management were Process Church Processcross.jpg and therefore considered rivals by the Freemasons.

I'm just saying, I would never blame them for promoting the careers of Optimo or Steve Bug.... Like, the Scientologists, MAYBE.

Darned cockwombles.
And now Berlin courts have put Berghain on a lower tax rate due to its cultural significance. At least some cities see the cultural value of their nightlife (and of taking shedloads of drugs in a very dark space)

Luka of course decried Berlin as a city full of graphic designers earlier in this very thread.

I went earlier this year for the first time and it seemed very pleasant, to the extent that I wanted to move there. That was mainly cos I met someone who writes and teaches meditation and is able to live comfortably. But the queuing thing did rub me the wrong way. So much so that I missed out on Berghain, and being rubbed in the right way in the toilets?

Does much good music come out of Berlin? Obviously it's peerless for dancing to boring techno for three days straight but have they produced anything that isn't boring lately, or ever?

Berlin lives off the reputation it earned in the early 1990s. Back then, the city was indeed happening.

@Berghain - it's a hellhole of pretentious self-proclaimed hipsterdom.

Who was it saying on here a few years back that he got let into the Berghain while on a stag do - a STAG DO, let me repeat - as one of a sizeable group of pissed-up, straight, obviously British, obviously non-germanophone lads?

I have a soft spot for Berlin (and boring techno) and I thought Berghain was pretty amazing when I went, but the last time was a long time ago (and I was off my head). Didn't come across any pretentiousness afaicr, but I can imagine that has changed.

Berlin's own music reputation insofar as it exists has got to rest on Basic Channel, Monolake, stuff like that

The most extreme and rarified forms of pretentiousness are all but invisible to those who are not themselves initiated into at least the outer circle of pretentiousness.

I do think Fabric, to take one example, would have been a better club if they'd had a (generally) sniffy door policy ala. Berghain.

theres lots obv with smart/no trainers/no jeans dress codes, but are there any london clubs that operate with a door policy of 'if you look shit (ie not cool, interesting, etc), you dont get in'?

i went to a clapham club on saturday which was decked out to look 'classy' (ie budget-luxuriousness) but then they let people wearing any old thing in lol.

id support a new door policy encouraging sartorial elitism.

I dunno, it's still bullshit really, but the door policy at some Berlin clubs is more about if you know which DJs are playing, what type of music it is, etc., rather than clothing choices. Which actually could be an anti-hipster thing.

I think Berghain in particular is more about filtering out foreigners and non-cool ppl.

trying to imagine how that would work in practice.

'whos on the bill tonight?'
'where have they played before?'
'name five of their vinyl only singles'
