There's no doubt online porn and online dating tinder etc have played a big part in creating Incels (among other grotesque and lurid social phenomena).

The deformation, or to use a less value laden term, modification, of human bodies is fascinating. All these bloated hulks, men who have imposed a calorific surplus on themselves, and become swollen, waddling, stiff, clearly, visibly uncomfortable. Or the squat mania that has given white women these huge muscular sinewy arses in an attempt to mimic rap video arses. Bodies that require completely deranged amounts of work and food to maintain, supplements, rigid gym routines etc.

It's not exercise per se. A lot of these men can't breathe properly, have fucked hearts etc cos they refuse to do any cardio for fear of losing gains. It's insane. The cult of the alpha. Wanting to impose your will by dint of sheer mass. Physical intimidation.

I feel like I could have been an incel if I had a slightly different personality - more angry, less empathetic, etc. Years back I bought "The Game" with the hope that it might help me - it's the most cringeworthy book ever written, though, so I dumped it after a few chapters. And it didn't help me, obviously.

Also I empathise with the weird because I'm obviously weird, people always say I'm weird, but I've got enough of whatever it is that makes me acceptable and likeable rather than repulsive. And you meet those people sometimes, don't you, who are weird and NOT likeable, just weird, people you'd avoid if you saw them in the street, people you'd never invite to a party, as much as you feel sorry for them.

Some of these incels are probably like that - they know they're weird, people (probably not just women) dislike them or don't connect with them, and the self-consciousness of this makes them weirder and harder to get along with.

Breivik was like that, apparently. A weird guy who wasn't likeable, didn't have any friends, just stayed in his room playing world of warcraft and ingesting far-right mythology - even the other nazis didn't like him.

isn't it also weird that neo-nazi's in the usa dress up like marvel characters? i was watching some video's from i believe portland and some of those white supremacist were doing a cosplay thing and also they fight with swords and shields. just all a bit strange no?

Some of 'em are into Vikings etc as part of the heritage fantasy. Completely ahisotorical of course but when has that ever stopped anyone?

I think it’s probably worth pointing out that a lot of teenage boys are socially awkward and that there are a lot of different online and offline subcultures to choose from. A mate’s kid is/was a brony and another was big into online gaming and both are fundamentally lovely but not chads by any means.

My guess is that they both got exposed to this misogynistic rubbish but both managed to navigate around it and got girlfriends. Admittedly neither of them is autistic (but I did used to wonder) and they both lived in London.

Also my daughter had a mate who was autistic and he was lovely and they would play minecraft together. Not sure if that would have lasted into puberty but they ended up at different schools.

There was one autistic kid in her year at secondary school who was into alt right stuff though and who had no friends because he was an absolute dickhead. Money probably better spent on him rather than the Prevent millions being used to harass muslims.

So - the toxic incel thing isn’t the only thing on offer but it does exert a gravitational pull for some and I’m sure there are people trying to work out how it can be subverted.

Needless to say, seeing women as potential friends rather than fucks is part of the solution. As is feminism.

You should watch the Joe Rogan Dorian Yates interview.

It gave me an insight into body building. Obviously they look like ridiculous freaks but the object is almost to see how far you can push the human body - and from that point of view it's pretty extraordinary.

Look at his LEGS ffs.

He's a safe guy though, too, very articulate and self-deprecating and loves his DMT.

I was more talking about the mainstreamification of it. Not the comic book heroes like Yates or Coleman. A lot of these lads who have added bulk, very top heavy, strange posture, but puffy, without any definition, 6 meals a day, protein shakes. You see them everywhere now.

Oh yeah

If I was putting on my professor spectacles I might theorise that it's about (primarily) working class men losing their sense of power in a world of shrinking career options and so onnn...

The Incels think it's partly driven by online dating. Its certainly an "arms race". It's made its way into office culture in a big way. The whole logic of domination and intimidation. It is never allowed to spill over into violence so it has this visual theatrical aspect. Implied violence. The threat of violence as weight, heft, muscle.

The super-super-jacked guys you see are obviously massively abusing steroids too (because it's simply impossible to look like that from exercise and diet alone), which ties in with the incel thing (despite the stereotypical incel being either weedy or obese), because long-term use of those drugs leads to dick and ball shrinkage, infertility and impotence. So there are these guys who are, visually, grotesque hyper-masculine caricatures, but who are also virtual eunuchs.

My office doesn't have that many guys like this tbh, although plenty go to the gym.

I'm sure there is an element of being driven mad by capitalism/advertising here. Images of men with 'perfect' bodies, images of unattainable women, the steroidal sex in porn movies. Reality begins to look shrivelled and feeble next to all that stuff.

To play shredder's advocate - although there is obviously a huge element of vanity and machismo to this stuff, it's also as an activity something that potentially gives your life a bit more meaning and structure. Maybe not for the flabby beefcakes, but if you want to get ripped it takes a lot of discipline, steroids or not.

Plus our culture is health-crazed, anyway. There's more awareness than there has ever been (as far as i can tell) about the importance of eating healthily, exercising, not smoking, etc.

Probably makes for a more boring culture.

It doesn't give it meaning but it it does allow people to have the experience (a good thing) of setting a goal and attaining it. If you lift weights you get immediate results. You can see it. It's like the difference between an office job which is an endless treadmill and a trade job where by the end of it you've built a garage or something,

It's good to be stronger. It's good to be fitter. I'm not suggesting people should be fat jelly people or pipe cleaner men who can't carry home their own shopping.
