- So Lovecraft was a racist, but is still not quite cancelled?
- R Kelly, the paedo/sex abuser, cancelled? I would still like to be able to hear his tunes, but i don't think it's allowed now
- MJ likewise, but his tunes are canonical?
- Conrad was a bit racist too, but is not cancelled, afaik
- I personally cancelled Tea for racist outbursts
- Weinstein - i guess there should be a list of movies that he made that we should avoid
- but Woodie Allen, is he on his way to rehabilitation now?
- our own Nina, could we rehabilitate her? How??
It's not black and white, is it? and i'm definitely not arguing for these beasts,
obviously there are all kinds of factors and complexities - the gravity of the offence - was it just words or was it actions? was it a crime? did they do the time? Did they apologise? who suffered?
how far back was it? how much water has passed under the bridge? how have our attitudes changed since?
Should we have a consistent reaction, or is there space fot personal subjectivity? Are some cancellations undermined by our own prejudices?
How come our puritanical impulses have deepened in some respects but not others? How does Boris sail through?
So many questions,
Can we have a policy clarification, please, or at least some robust guidance
That's interesting, I've never heard anyone use that particular defence. In my experience people just sort of tend to glaze over and then move on and vote for him anyway.
LOOOOL fkn ell
Is that racist?
iranian teenage chess queen bloody hell !!
Me too.Every once in a while I get to congratulate myself on good judgement and steering well clear of that thread was one of them. So wrong.
I like all sorts of wrong 'uns to be fair
I've noticed there are some terrible people who are sort of likeable and who I have to remind myself of how terrible they are and some where it just isn't an issue, even if I like their work, because I just don't like them. Burroughs would be an example of the former, Celine and Henry Miller the latter.
Yeah. Racist and a snob I suppose. No, but I imagine it would fall under prejudice. The point is he thought anyone who didn't adhere to his incredibly rigid view of what a person should be was inferior and that his view was even more rigid than a lot of the out and out racists of his time.
I think the unsatisfying and unsettling answer is people can forgive, or at least look past, basically anything and it's entirely dependent on a shit load of variables that are impossible to quantify. Also it definitely helps someone's case if they're known and appreciated for something other than whatever it is they're accused of, e.g. William Burroughs is the writer who also shot his wife as opposed to the possible murderer who also wrote some books.
I really like Polanski's films, I think I said I watched through them all (or nearly) again recently and several of them are truly unique and brilliant.roman polanski
though he should've also been cancelled just for making horrible shit movies*
