so clearly listeners registered it as a decisive break and that being the case it seem reasonable to treat it as one. what mystikal might have to do with anything is not clear to me.

I can easily dare and I don't hear it. What I here is the voice being refracted through a disembodied (impossibly big) cathedral, but not anything thermonuclear. Quite the contrary in fact.

Now I would call this thermonuclear:

although thirds pick is more interesting the sad thing for many people would be how similar they sound. play them to your dad and he'd just assume they were the same genre lol

in any case like this it's possible to point to continuities and trace a lineage you can do it with grime for instance but by doing that you miss what is not just an obvious rupture but a traumatic one which was heard as a visceral howl of pain from millions of rap listeners.

It's weird, when I think about it, how Young Thug was seen as so abhorrant by older heads. No doubt a deficiency on my part, or maybe I'm just too used to avant-garde experiments. if we're talking about (what is perceived to be) that old Rakim-esque style of the righteously serious black man then Lil Wayne seems to be much more feminised in relation to that. There's quite a bit more (well let's not say aggression) but in a weird way contortions of older rap mediums within this new poppier format with Thug.

This goes back to that thread you created (which I can't find now) about the hip hop culture war. The question is whether Young Jeezy and Guchi fans hate Thug so much in comparison to 'real hip hop' heads.

the last time anyone listened to a song all the way through was in the 2000s.

Were the howls of anguish at Young Thug any different to those at, say, Soulja Boy? I mentioned Mystikal as an example of a break with rap-as-poetry long predating the Neon Screams era.
