I like the orthodox churches cos they kinda the best of both

Admittedly I'm not as widely travelled as you, but Istanbul has some pretty fucking amazing mosques.

out of the mosques ive seen with my own eyes id say cathedrals but judging from photos its more even. most of the mosques ive seen is a load of somalis over a pizza shop

Tbf that sort of mosque is the Islamic equivalent of one of those ugly, squat, brick-built Baptist churches you see sometimes. Not really comparable with a cathedral.

Anyway, I've voted cathedrals just because I've seen more amazing cathedrals than I have mosques. But I'd be very hard pushed to give any kind of objective judgement.

there's a whole genre of big expensive new modern mosques, in a way that there isn't with cathedrals. there's a massive new one in oxford. and that one in sheffield. both of those are pretty nice. but then there are massive new ones in places like abuja. abu dhabi. rabat. islamabad. kampala. always huge and right in the town center. statement pieces. mosques are of the moment. there's a lot of money to go round and the people who have it are up for spreading it internationally.

even in afghanistan during the war my mate would point out a new mosque that had just gone up as we drove by, he told me it was paid for by the government of iran, which wasn't a particularly important player in the war but nonetheless are committed to some kind of expansion
