Anyway, back on some soul.

75 Athea Franklin - Night Life Aint the Good Life (Live) I meant to list this earlier, first heard on via Andy Weatherall. But just listen to it:

In the mid-2000s or so, I began getting turned onto what was called Deep Soul via Dave Godin's amazing comps. So, not the dancefloor burners like some above, but slower, deeper, often coming out of the Southern US. I think the tempo gives these amazing church-educated singers more time to just ... stretch out. I wish I had deeper knowledge here but we start where we stand. I think Bassbeyondreason collects stuff like this.

76. Knight Bros. - Temptation 'bout to get me

77. Jaibi - You Got Me

Obviously now there's an indie rap 12" from this time I'm trying to remember and have no fucking idea what it's called or who it's by, all I can see is mental picture of the label. Black and gold, something like "Static" ffs
I've only remembered it!
Special bonus overcoming amnesia & senility "I'm gonna live forever!” post

Erule - Listen Up

I was introducing myself to the delights of krautrock at this time as well, probably my favourite band of all time are Can. I think they have such influence now in part 'cos of those who grew up on rap. The bass (Czukay) and drums (Liebzeit) being the dominant part of their sound, not guitar.

70. Can - Waiting for the Streetcar

71. Amon Duul II - Archangels Thunderbird
One of the all time heavyweight riffs

ripple effect, title track to Wolf City gets thrown on the platter every 5 years or so

This kinda brings us up to the moment where I started collecting records again. One of the first I remember buying was the Phew LP after reading about it on Woebot. This all started in the middle of a break up where she moved out, I blew all my money on eBay, met Rich, "plant food" happened and lots more besides, did a bit of DJing and eventually went into therapy. It's not that linear a trajectory, I may have done therapy anyway even without meeting Rich.

Buying records again meant being exposed to lots of Vinyl Vulture charity shop classics, psych, Rich's fine collection, started collecting private presses for a while. It was a fun few years though parenthood has meant that's been over for a minute I guess?

Couple of DJ tunes:

78. Trade Martin - Work Song

79. Billy Watkins - I'm Tired

80. The C.O.D's

81. The Allisons - Money

After dropping out of rap, I got back into it again in partly due to the influence of another dude I met through forums, Noah, who put me onto so much amazing rap. My favourite in this new period was always Gucci and going through his back catalogue blew my mind, partly 'cos he's fucking hilarious. 2 entries 'cos he's a fucking legend.

83. Gucci Mane - Pillz

84. Gucci Mane - Hell Yes

85. Starlito - I'd Rather Be With You
Another dude Noah put me onto. Starlito's back catalogue is deep and profound, and worth your time (and mine). Here he is riding the classic Bootsy number.

Bonus track:
One of the best pieces of live footage you'll ever see.

My adventures in record collecting took me into the world of field recordings. Unsurprisingly a lot of the absolute best stuff came out of the Black American church.

86: Reverend Charlie Jackson - What A Time
Fuck I would've gone to church if I'd known it sounded like this. Some of his shit sounds like the Velvet Underground.

87. Moving Star Hall Singers - Talking Bout A Good Time
I mean, look at that cover. One of my all time favourite LPs that vindicates record collecting OCD.

88. Untouchable, we're not worthy etc etc. These kinda records make me wanna just junk everything and start all over again. I mean, why listen to anything else.

89. Six Boys in Trouble - Gang Fight
This is one of my favourite LPs of all time. Which is a bit sad really, 'cos it points to an extremely sad story, the incarceration of young black males, which is looking at the history, pretty much an extension of the slavery system. Anyway, I'm glad these guys had this much fun while they were banged up. This is proto-rap, 20 years before the first rap on vinyl, 30 years before NWA. What an incredible document.

Couple of killer 45s that found there way to me when I started collecting again.

90 Ultramates - Pitter patter
Ghostly 50s (?) R&B

91. The Ones - You'll Haven't Seen My Love
White devils letting rip over a haunting organ

92. Betty & Karen - I'm Not Satisfied
Ended up in the DJ box. Everyone I knew loved this.

93. Bembaya Jazz National - Tentemba
Can't quite believe I've got this far without posting any African music. Every one of these tunes is a miniature universe of scenes, singers, players. African music is no exception. Syllipone was the national label for cultural production in Guinea from the 60s through to the 80s. Everything I've heard on it has been incredible though the shifting cultural politics is kinda hidden to me due to the language barrier (i.e. one of the most famous songs on the label "Mandjou" by Salif Keita is a praise song for the dictator's wife). The music speaks for itself though.

I got into collecting US private presses for a while. The space that lack of a commercial imperative throws up led to some fantastic experiments. Loads of total dross but some great stuff. UK privates tend to be terrible lounge singers up until the 80s when some interesting post-punk and jazz bits emerge. A couple of faves.

95. Lori Longmire - Feel Like Makin' Love
Good ol' country gal and her drum machine covers Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway

96. Bobby Brown - Hawaii
Surfer crooner cuts insane easy listening dub LP in the back of his van. I love this record.

97. Kosmiche ballad from America's only 2 headed Evil Knevil impersonator

Finishing up in the present with a couple of things new to me though the music may be one old.

98. Jackie Opel - My Girl
Hair's breadth between this and the Chicago soul sound of the time.

100 With a bullet
Matic Horns - African Horns
This is not a 70s tune, much as it sounds like one. I'm putting it in 'cos it's the last record I bought (online, last night). I'm not sure exactly of the provenance. The bringing of that classic sound in the contemporary fits what I was aiming for with the thread.
