There's an outside chance I might be going on Saturday, I'll be visiting a mate in Shef who is an absolute addict for bassline. Will report back if I do go. He's been once already and says that they've done a good job - 3 rooms, one playing slightly lighter old-school garage. I only ever went...

    Roiling football blather

United are already through, so unfortunately any fantasies of Red Clive imploding live on-air will have to wait. Bordeaux are charging through the group stages. Laurent Blanc looks like he might make a big splash as a manager

pub or venue in stokey/dalston/hackney area

The Shacklewell Arms in Dalston has a decent -sized club space at the back which can be hired out til 6am. Has a DJ booth, bar and soundsystem (not incredibly loud when I was there). No idea what sort of fee/deposit they ask for. Cool place though

I would definitely like to see almost all of the absolute minnow nations weeded out in a pre-qualifying stage. The bottom 8 in the rankings - Andorra, San Marino, Faeroe Isles, Luxembourg, Malta, Azerbaijan, Liechtenstein, Armenia for instance - play in an straight knock-out and the winner...

    Roiling football blather

How can Egypt dominate the African Nations and yet systematically fail to get the WC? They've got an uphill struggle tonight. Nigeria are teetering on the brink as well, which I think is a shame personally. The path NZ have had to the finals is absolutely farcical. A group containing New...

I'm going to put an accumulator on Portugal, France & Russia to all qualify. Can't decide between Greece and Ukraine and whether to bung one of them in or not. :slanted: I feel dirty though because I want the Republic to qualify.

    The ref sent him to the stands for that as well! What a pedant. Dragan Stojkovic: what a player. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src=""...

The Flaming Lips - 'Embryonic' (2009)

Really enjoying this mix, been sound-tracking my bus to work. And it's a tough gig first thing in the morning let me tell you. Haven't heard that Lips album yet. I've found their more recent stuff to be a bit happy-clappy but will give this a try.

Marlon King sent down for 18 months and sacked by Wigan. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/8332029.stm What an absolute cunt of a man. It'd be nice to think that's the end of his career but he'll be out in 9 months in all likelihood. Could have a club in time for the start of next season.

Does it matter if species become extinct?

^ I like AA Gill but this has got midlife crisis written all over it. Like he's decided to start living out his Hunter S Thompson fantasies.

    Cats or Dogs?

But cats aren't artists, that's a poor analogy. They're more like the feckless, landed gentry. Whereas Dogs have been willing workers throughout the ages. Salt of the Earth

    BNP on Question Time

Completely agree. I found it so infuriating when (during the discussion of whether Islam was 'wicked') someone in the audience piped up with a comment along the lines of "but isn't Old Testament Christianity just as awful and misogynist, etc.." I couldn't believe anyone would be keen to turn it...

    Favourite (official) Kraftwerk Studio Album

I suppose you could but it's perhaps a bit misleading because the rest of the world will recognise it as pop electronica/techno. But for me "Krautrock" is more of an era and a network of people than an actual genre with stylistic boundaries, so in that sense it's completely fair enough. Many...

    Favourite (official) Kraftwerk Studio Album

Reading through this thread I thought some people might be interested to hear this. It's a bootleg from from Kraftwerk's quite poorly documented krautrock era. Essentially it's Florian Schneider with the Neu duo Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother on drums and guitar - and the three of them grind...

    Public Enemy- Greatest band ever!

I stumbled across a recent edition of the norton anthology of african american literature in the university library a few months ago. Was surprised [pleasantly] to find that the editors had [somewhat clumsily] appended Chuck Ds lyrics from a couple of ...Nation... tunes into a section on...
