I don't think he's trying for that kind of cult cool. It's this shiny, glossy kind of empty film that just isn't what you expect it to be. I love the bit when (in montage with the music playing) he takes the kid and her mother for a drive, they throw stones in the water etc etc and then it ends with them back at her house and she says something like "He really enjoyed that" and you're left with this feeling that they literally haven't spoken all day up to that point, the montage is actually what happened not a highlights package, the spell finally broken at the end of the day when she speaks.

i really enjoyed Thundercrack. definitely one of the weirdest porn films i've seen.
any other George Kuchar films worth watching?

Everything the Brothers Kuchar did is worth a punt, I'd start with the shorts collection 'Colour Me Lurid' which is fab and then go from there. They made a load, a load of stuff though so you may get bored, especially with the video diary type work. Worth remembering that Thundercrack was Curt McDowell though, which is where the sex comes from.

I watched 'Odd Man Out' with James Mason last night :

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0039677/

It's a Carol Reed kinda IRA noir set in Belfast in 1947, except then it tips into something else. I can't recommend it more highly, really, it's one of the best British films I've ever seen. The reviews either say it was a kinda test run for The Third Man or outclassed it by a mile, I'll have to watch The Third Man again now to check, but I was amazed, it fuckin kicks in.

Wendy and Lucy. Just great North American indie cinema, of which there is always so much, much of it under the radar...not this film particularly, but Kelly Reichardt's other films, I've never even heard of....anyone have one to recommend?

i thought old joy was pretty beautiful

thanks! i was hoping somebody would point me in the right direction. his back cat looks wonderfully obscure and pretty massive and i'm not gambling on being able to find many of his shorts.

i was disappointed with The Third Man. it may have been ahead of it's time but ultimately i didn't like some of its direction. will have to watch this because i really wanted the The Third Man to be the classic its supposed to be. if there is a film
that outclasses it then yes please.

I know it's the Middlebrow Hit of the Year and has about as much underground credibility as Prince Philip, but Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy was really very good.

The beginning was a bit rushed - it felt like someone giving you a plot synopsis of the book - but once it hit it's stride it was brilliant. Pretty much all the acting was superb, the characterization was spot on (if you've read the book, you can tell who all the main characters are before their names are mentioned, for instance) and they stuck pretty faithfully to the book's ethos of no idealism and almost no action. Cracking stuff.

Just watched a film called Here directed by Jim Hollands - an immersive and overwhelming experience with the 3d goggles on and the computer screen up right in front of me with the volume high. It basically consists of a film of a Joe Orton play from the sixties with the sound (mainly) removed and replaced with appropriate(ish) phrases and slogans chosen by the director from a huge library he built up for the purpose - plus a generally dark and aggressive soundtrack with respite coming in the form of interludes from Del Shannon and Chicory Tip. The film is also manipulated, looped, played on top of itself and generally fucked with as the phrases are both spoken (whispered, shouted etc) over the film and fired at you in 3d subtitle form at the bottom of the screen. Although the phrases at the bottom are often out of sync with, and sometimes totally different from, the things you hear. Things such as "If I need sperm I can get sperm" or "Bloody Aryan horse-cults".
Something of the quality of the image and the disjointed/disjointing nature of the experience reminded me a bit of Anti-Clock if any of you have seen that. Anyway, need to watch it again to try and piece more of an understanding of it together - but not right away, I think my eyes are broken and maybe my brain.

"and feel the need to put cyanide in dad's coffee next time you see him?
is it online? sounds like i should take some PCP and dig in"
Exactly to the first bit. Dunno if it's online, I got a dvd off the director, that might be your best course of action as well.

Darned cockwombles.
a recommendation seconded from earlier in the thread (i refer you to page 5) - Angel Dust, a Japanese serial killer/thriller, filmed quite stunningly. Definitely recommend.

Also - La Commune - 5 1/2 hours documenting the Paris Commune of 1871. I haven't got too far yet, but it is damn good. There's a playlist on youtube, handily cutting it into digestible 10 minute chunks, when the whole thing at once might be slightly daunting.

days of heaven. like a teenage fantasist bonnie and clyde. saw badlands too but that sort of american history tale thing doesnt do much for me.

also frankenhooker - brilliantly twisted late 80s like a b-movie weird science.

Coincidentally, I saw Days of Heaven yesterday as well. Up there with Thin Red Line as my favorite Malick. Don't know how much that means yet.

Also, von Triers Medea. Running water and horses brings Tarkovsky to mind. And then, a lot of death and suffering. I really prefer his earliest and latest stuff.

I'd highly recommend this website, loads of good films and obscurities, http://www.cinefilz.com/

Watched Morvan Callar the other night, probably been mentioned on here before but thought it was great, nice soundtrack aswell.
