I don't think he's trying for that kind of cult cool. It's this shiny, glossy kind of empty film that just isn't what you expect it to be. I love the bit when (in montage with the music playing) he takes the kid and her mother for a drive, they throw stones in the water etc etc and then it ends with them back at her house and she says something like "He really enjoyed that" and you're left with this feeling that they literally haven't spoken all day up to that point, the montage is actually what happened not a highlights package, the spell finally broken at the end of the day when she speaks.
