If you've heard a Youngsta set you'll know: he's a master of the decks. Twisting, tweaking, scraping his exclusive dubplates into a sub-bass assault wave, he treads the exhilarating line between implosion and explosion, dark and light, pleasure and pain.

Youngsta began DJing at 12, appearing on London garage pirate Freek FM at 13. Now 24, by day he works in seminal Soho record shop Blackmarket, before trekking back to his home in Essex. By night you can catch him on leading pirate Rinse FM, the station that's home to Skream, Boy Betta Know, Marcus NASTY and Wiley’s Roll Deep. It also broke Dizzee Rascal.* On Rinse he'll be deep in the mix, pulling off jaw-dropping mixes - but never, ever speaking on the mic. “My show on Rinse is very important to me. I really enjoy showcasing my sound each week,” he admits. “I’m proud to be part of Rinse.”

When he’s not on radio, he’s off spreading the gospel of his trademark halfstep sound around the globe. “I’ve really enjoyed playing in New York, San Francisco and LA,” he insists before reeling of a dizzying number of countries he’s also attacked carrying only a pile of dubplates and the most precise mixing skills on the planet. “I’ve also really enjoyed playing Canada and Japan. In Europe, I’ve enjoyed Ireland, France, Germany, Poland, Estonia, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Italy, Hungary, Croatia and Israel.”

International acclaim is no less than he deserves, given the genre-shattering sets he pioneered in 2005 on Rinse and at dubstep’s founding club, Forward>>. Having built an alliance with Loefah (DMZ), his selection pushed the boundaries of what was possible to classify as ‘dance’ music, stripping back dubstep’s early percussive garage flesh to reveal its raw exoskeleton. This dark, sub heavy halfstep style was captured on mix CD Dubstep Allstars Vol. 02. It would also change dubstep forever.

As well as providing a unique document of an amazingly fertile time in dubstep, Dubstep Allstars Vol. 02 would be the springboard from which Youngsta took on the world. As the scene evolved and exploded into international consciousness, Youngsta took his trademark dark halfstep and built in higher impact riddims to attack the dancefloor. He’s brought new producers through, like Kryptic Minds, 7even and SP, by providing visionary feedback as precise as his mixing. “I give honest advice and speak my mind,” he humbly admits. “Everyone has a different opinion of what’s good and what’s not. I just go with what I feel is right and what works.” The results, as history now shows, speak for themselves.
