That Mentasm sound is still the standard-bearer.

Put that sound over some super-chopped-up early jungle breaks and that's really all I need.

alright I'll do a zip of hoovers and might as well do one of breakbeats. My production partner is a bit of a junglist and has gigabytes of the shit.

Ok here is some original samples of the 'whatthe?' preset on the juno, plus ones where I tweaked the sample to give a more sustained note. I also threw in some other rave hoover stabs I had on my HD.

I hadn't seen the video for Bad Romance before and, tbh, I clicked on it to hear its hooveriness, then clicked through to find out who did the send-up. Turns out: no send up!

Here's a little sketch using almost nothing but three samples from Fundamental. I did cheat a little by using an 808 kick, but I figured at least that would be a period-accurate way to cheat. It was fun doing the pseudo-UK funky beat with that old break.

I must say that a) hoovers are fun! and b) all those old breaks are *grimy* - it's hard to get them to sit right in the mix.

Another thing this thread has taught me: hardly any of these tunes have anything over, like 10kHz. Probably most have nothing over 5kHz. It was not a very hi-fi era.
