Dissensus Best of 2011 Discussion

Official disappointments – stuff I thought had potential to be good but turned out not to be:
Joker – The Vision (though I should have known really)
SBTRKT – self-titled
Damu – Unity
Katy B - On A Mission (the album)

Potentially big stuff I still haven’t got round to hearing:
Sully – Carrier
Pinch and Shackleton album
Martyn – Ghost People
Jackmaster Fabric CD
Butterz Rinse CD
Silkie – City Limits Vol 2
The DJ Roc thing on Planet Mu
Tyler – Goblin plus loads of other OF stuff
Zomby – Nothing EP
New Redinho and Randomer EPs on Numbers
Actress free giveaways

In terms of labels I thought Hessle, Keysound and Numbers had particularly strong and consistent. Local Action, Butterz, Hyperdub and a few others had good moments but for me were not quite as consistent. Swamp 81 I still have very mixed feelings about. Night Slugs didn't quite click with me this year compared to 2010, though this might be my memory misleading me.

New faces - producers/artists who impressed me this year that either first came through this year, or had been off my radar before, or that I felt made major strides compared to previously:

Preditah
Royal T
Formula
NKC
Jae Elle
Scrufizzer
Ruby Lee Ryder
Matt IQ
Walton
Dutty Dan
DJ Pantha
Deamonds
Beneath
Smokeoffski
Carnao

This one isn't really in order, and obv is particularly subjective as I'm sure there will be some people out there who were hearing demos from these guys 5 years ago or whatever.
Edit: it would prob be fair to include a few hip-hop producers too, like Clams Casino, Araab Muzik, even Lex Luger I wasn't really familiar with until recently.

Boo You and Mood Swings weren't really my cup of tea. Orangeade was good but maybe not quite as good as I was hoping.

Don't have the energy to draw together a full overview, its not been a particularly exciting year though has it? Only really bothered to follow funky. With the Hip hop stuff I think theres been a lot (too much?) good stuff but I'm pretty content to just dip in now and then to youtube vids and the odd free mixtape. I usually just check the (rather excellent) dissensus thread for that stuff and thats enough for me.

Funkystepz have been by far the best producers in dance music this year. No one else has really touched them. Just a constant stream of great EPs, remixes, soundcloud give-aways and dubs on their radio shows. And they show no signs of slowing down. It amazes me how they can do so many different styles and yet each track sounds quintessentially Funkystepz. Too many great tracks to mention but my faves have probably been 'Dirty Dutch', 'Shocker', 'Half on a baby remix', 'Backseat remix', 'Hold Yuh remix' and the new Rhianna one obv. There are many many more...

These get top marks too. i think we can all agree on these...

Ill Blu - Meltdown EP, The Wave (with Sneakbo)
Champion - Sensitivity,
Fuzzy Logik - All My Love, 'Casanova remix', Playground

Honourable mentions have to go to

Mad One - the glut of recent devine releases, 'People keep dancing' finally coming out
LR Groove - '1st step', 'Device' if you want trribal
Over (Toby Ioi remix) - is this 2011 though?
My Body - Tanesha
Greenmoney - lots of good tracks
The free Donaeo album 'Indigo' (minus the crap breakbeat tracks)
Andy J and S-Tee radio raving mix
etc etc (Andy's already mentioned most of the other good ones in his list)

Away from Funky the best things I've heard have been the DJ Rashad album 'Just a taste', and the various Rashad and Spinn mixes that have been floating around. Really looking forward to the new Rashad album, could be a classic.

erm, what else...that free zipfile from DJ Pantha was fantastic, and I like the JG stuff I've heard too but I haven't follow bassline very much. Or grime, but I actually really enjoyed the Wiley album and most of the Butterz stuff I've bothered to check, especially Orangeade and the DJ Q remix of Woo riddim (I think the original's overrated though!). Most new MCs I hear nowadays all sound the same to me, they just wash over me. Same with Road Rap on the whole.

I gave the Zomby album a chance but it was very underwhelming, and I do actually rate him as a producer. Haven't properly listened to the Rustie one yet but it sounds totally the opposite of the Zomby one: overwhelming and probably a bit tiresome to listen to.

I agree with whoever it was that mentioned 'Like a G6', that was a great tune.

Ah! I just remembered one of my fave tracks this year was the garage remix of 'Shopaholic' by Wideboys feat. Sway and McLean. Really cheesy and retro but completely irresistible to me. Have a listen it will put a smile on your face!

rap is hitting me less and less. rick ross had a great year, released the best single (i'm a boss) and put on meek millz. i rate ross without liking him but if the alternative is take care then he wins all day. sad that the biggest hip hop release of the year was mostly r&b. i find it worrying how asap rocky, odd future and this whole fader rap thing is gaining traction so quick. styles p, gucci mane, uncle murda etc didn't drop enough fire this year and french montana signed to bad boy.

rate: just blaze (lord knows), pusha t, lex luger and the south, ar-ab, araabmuzik, kreayshawn (gucci gucci), jay z and kanye west (otis), fekky (this ones on me)

i listened to 50% house this year. last year it was 5% (generous). it's influencing a lot of music coming out of here both underground (post dubstep/funky) and mainstream (weird r&b euro pop) so i think it's only natural for it re-emerging in popularity (?). will drop a more detailed list in the relevant thread.

rate: fcl - let's go, deetron - balance 020, underground quality, noir & haze - come around (solumun remix)

not really feeling post dubstep (where it's at so far?). the stuff brackles plays is nice but the rest of it i find boring, yet it tries so hard to be interesting. that said it's played a vital part in uk music reaching a wider audience (europe/us). dubstep blew up in a big way obviously. the post-dubstep or "uk bass" guys are making in roads with the techno/house crowd (bok bok/tom trago). hope the sound catches up the with scene.

rate: ben ufo, monki, r&s, hessle audio, deep teknologi, hypercolor, rinsefm, boiler room, bristol.

i can't be bothered to type anymore but funky has to make the right moves next year is champion - sensitivity needs some recognition.

Looking at the play counts, what I enjoyed most this year was:

* Kuedo - Severant
* Ennio Morricone - Early Works
* Zomby - Dedication
* Fennesz - Seven Stars
* Miles Davis - Miles Davis Quintet Live in Europe

Others that didn't get played that much, but are worth a mention:

* Shackleton - Fireworks
* Rustie - Glass Swords
* Ohneotrix Point Never - Replica
* Dave Monolith - Welcome
* Donato Dozzy - K
* Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer - Re:ECM

That said, 2011 was probably the year I lost my obsession with new music and started looking backwards, mostly for jazz.

we can delay.ay.ay...
My favourite out of the 5 vinyls I bought this year is Heatsick - Dream Tennis
