There's a 'nuum at work here - ;) - that goes: Greek ('gyros', usually pork) -> Cypriot (halloumi etc.) -> Turkish (the canonical doner kebab - invented in Berlin, of course) -> Irani/Afghan (more emphasis on minced meat: the kofte) -> Indian subcontinent (chicken tikka kebab, ancestor of the Anglo-Bengali tikka masala).

Many 'Turks' who've settled in London are actually Kurds, of course, who fit in between Turkey and Iran in the above 'nuum. Hence the availability of kofte in Green Lanes kebab takeaways.
